Suggestions for Public Services
Microphone Use
The microphone enables everyone to hear clearly, have the messages recorded and pre-screen the speakers. The larger the auditorium, the more difficult it is to prophesy or sing a message that can be heard distinctly. A monitored mike also keeps more than one person from speaking at the same time in different parts of the auditorium. The microphone should be placed at the front of the sanctuary and be under the supervision of an appointed person. (See the next chapter for suggestions on microphone procedure for the person prophesying.) A good screening process encourages those in the church, both mem bers and non-members, with something worthwhile to say and discour ages those who have something conflicting to say. Since a number of people in a Spirit-active meeting will be experienc ing the presence of the Lord, it is essential that everyone be able to dif ferentiate between what is for personal edification and what is for con gregational edification. This is determined by evaluating content, direction and the nature of the revelation. The church leadership hopes everyone is experiencing the Holy Spirit on a personal basis, but the Spirit also uses selected people from time to time to bring congregational prophecy for the benefit of everyone assembled. Creating a time slot in the service for pre-screened prophetic manifestations allows for spiritual spontaneity while, at the same time, bringing reasonable control. My suggestion is to have an appointed person, probably an elder, sta tioned by the microphone to act as monitor. This person should be suffi ciently prophetic so as to judge with fair accuracy, and thoroughly aware of the church's qualifications and criteria for those coming forward. Sev eral seats should be left open to accommodate prospective speakers. Any one who feels that he or she has a prophetic word to give should go up to the monitor in charge of the mike and review, quickly and quietly, what he or she has to say. People in the choir or worship team on the platform can use their leader as a monitor. "What do you have to share?" should be answered in a simple, direct summary statement as quietly as possible. It is also helpful if the person coming identifies what he or she has-such as, "I have an exhortation [or a prophecy or Scripture]"-and then gives the basic content. Personal tes timonies should be discouraged during this time and utilized on other occasions. (This preserves the time for the prophetic and actually enhances 355. Screening Those Who Come
