This hath been thy manner from thy youth, that thou obeyedst not my voice. 22 3 The wind shall eat up all thy pastors, and thy lovers shall go into captivity: surely then shalt thou be ashamed and confounded for all thy wickedness. P 23 2 O inhabitant of Lebanon, that makest thy nest in the cedars, how gracious shalt thou be when pangs come upon thee, the pain as of a woman in travail! 24 As I live, saith the LORD, though 4 Coniah the son of Jehoiakim king of

22:21 Jehoiakim, the luxury-loving ( in thy prosperity ) heretic son of godly King Josiah, developed an early habit ( This hath been thy manner from thy youth ) of not listening ( I will not hear ). Ungodly youthful habits (II Tim 2:22) often destroy adult lives. Change your unhealthy habits while you’re still young and your adult years will be kinder to you. 22:24a Coniah is Jehoiachin (Jere 37:1), who is also called Jeconiah (Jere 24:1 & 27:20). The reason God calls him Coniah instead of Jeconiah is because the “Je” in Jeconiah stands for Jehovah –and what God is saying by removing the “Je” from his name is: “I refuse to be identified with that man.” 22:24b The signet was the royal insignia ( Hag 2:23 ) that depicted authority. In taking off the signet ( yet would I pluck thee thence ), God was rejecting Jehoiachin/Coniah’s leadership. 22:26 Both Coniah and his mother (Queen Nehoshta – II Ki 24:6-8-15) were exiled to Babylon in 597 BC. The eighteen year old king old king would spend the next 37 years of his life in a Babylonian prison until Evilmerodach king of Babylon released him from his captivity in 561 BC (II Ki 25:27-30). NOTE – Coniah represents every young person who ever destroyed his life before he even lived it. The question is: How can a young person avoid this all-to-common tragedy? There are four ways to combat ruining your future: 1. Learn to think for yourself ( Heb 11 :24- 26 ) 2. Learn from the mistakes of others ( Jere 22:21 and Zech 1:2-4) 3. Learn to avoid the wrong crowd (Prov 1:10 and I Cor 15:33) 4. Learn to follow God (Isa 1:16-17) 22:29 By repeating the term “ O earth, earth, earth ” what God was saying was: “Pay close attention all ye inhabitants of this planet, for I am about to make a promise that only the real God could keep.” 22:30 The scribes that kept the register of the royal genealogies were told how they were to enter Coniah’s name in that register ( Write ye this man childless ). However, the promise God was about to make concerning Coniah had nothing to do with him not having children, for he had seven sons according to I Chronicles 3:17-18. Coniah would not be childless physically, but spiritually - that is, no descendant of his would ever occupy the Davidic throne or fulfill the Davidic covenant (the promise of a coming MESSIAH ). This is why Joseph (the step-father of Jesus) could not have been the real father of Jesus, for Joseph, according to Matthew 1:11-16, was a direct descendant of Jechoniah, and God said that no child in that lineage would ever occupy the Davidic throne or fulfill the Davidic covenant.
