stranger, the fatherless, nor the widow, neither shed innocent blood in this place. 4 For if ye do this thing indeed, then shall there enter in by the gates of this house kings sitting upon the throne of David, riding in chariots and on horses, he, and his servants, and his people. 5 But if ye will not hear these words, I swear by myself, saith the LORD, 1 that this house shall become a desolation. P 6 For thus saith the LORD unto the king’s house of Judah; Thou art Gilead unto me, and the head of Lebanon: 1 yet surely I will make thee a wilderness, and cities which are not inhabited. P 7 1 And I will prepare destroyers against thee, every one with his weapons: and they shall cut down thy choice cedars, and cast them into the fire. P 8 1 And many nations shall pass by this city, and they shall say every man to his neighbour, 2 Wherefore hath the LORD done thus unto this great city? P 9 1 Then they shall answer, Because they have forsaken the covenant of the LORD their God, and worshipped other gods, and served them. II Ki 24:6 (Death of Jehoiakim)
22:10 It always saddens God to see wicked men die ( but weep sore for him that goeth away ). He takes no pleasure in judging those who will not repent ( Ezk 18 :20- 23 ). God is good, yes, but He is “just” as well, as His justice is a necessary outflow fromHis holiness. 22:11 Just because you’re the king’s kid ( Josiah his father ) doesn’t mean you live like it. Jehoahaz “chose” his course in life despite his father’s example (II Ki 23:25). So it is with God’s kids. Even though we are admonished to follow the example of our Heavenly Father ( Mt 5:48 ), sadly, many of us “choose” to go our own way (Prov 14:12, Jn 6:66 and II Tim 4:10 ). NOTE – You might ask, “I don’t know why my children don’t follow my example?” To which I would answer, “Welcome to God’s world.” 22:13-14 When Josiah’s oldest son, Jehoiakim ( him ), came into power in 608 BC, he immediately began building his own palace by taking advantage of those who did the work (Lev 19:13, Deut 24:14-15, Mal 3:5 and Mk 10:19). God always takes notice when the rich get richer at the expense of others (Jms 5:1-4). NOTE – There are two things for which God condemns the rich: (1) The way they get their money (vs 13-14); and (2) The way they spend their money ( closest thyself in cedar ? – vs 15). 22:15 Jehoiakim’s father (King Josiah) made sure that the poor and needy were tended to during his reign. Not to concern one self with the needs of others is to live as though the Word of God does not exist (Exo 22:25-27 & 23:3,6,10,11, Lev 19:9,10,15 & 25:8-55, Deut 15:1-11 & 23:24,25 & 24:6,10-15 and Acts 20:33-35). WARNING – There is a notable difference between meeting a need (Lk 10:30-37) and enabling a want ( I Sam 15:31 and Lk 15:11 ), and you need to know the difference before you give. 22:16 To judge the cause of the poor and needy is to think like God thinks ( was not this to know me – Mt 19:21-22). 22:17 According to God (Exo 20:17 and Mt 19:16-22), to “covet” what isn’t yours (and what you have isn’t yours – Deut 8:16-18, I Sam 2:7-8, Psa 49:16-20 & 50:7-12, Job 1:9-10, Eccl 5:18-19 & 6:2, Hos 2:7-8 and I Tim 6:17), is sin ( Gen 12:16 – point #3).
