ISAIAH 51:16

ISAIAH 52:10

1111

LORD OF HOSTS is his name. 16 And I have put my words in thy mouth, and I have covered thee in the shadow of mine hand, that I may plant the heavens, and lay the foundations of the earth, and say unto Zion, Thou art my people. 17 2 Awake, awake, stand up, O Jerusalem, which hast drunk at the hand of the LORD the cup of his fury; thou hast drunken the dregs of the cup of trembling, and wrung them out. P 18 There is none to guide her among all the sons whom she hath brought forth; neither is there any that taketh her by the hand of all the sons that she hath brought up. 19 These two things are come unto thee; who shall be sorry for thee? desolation, and destruction, and the famine, and the sword: by whom shall I comfort thee? 20 Thy sons have fainted, they lie at the head of all the streets, as a wild bull in a net: they are full of the fury of the LORD, the rebuke of thy God. 21 Therefore hear now this, thou afflicted, and drunken, but not with wine: 22 Thus saith thy Lord the LORD, and thy God that pleadeth the cause of his people, Behold, 2 I have taken out of thine hand the cup of trembling, even the dregs of the cup of my fury; thou shalt no more drink it again: P The promise of Babylon’s fall to Medo-Persia (Fulfilled - Dan 5:30,31 - 539 BC) 23 4 But I will put it into the hand of them that afflict thee; which have said to thy soul, Bow down, that we may go over: and thou hast laid thy body as the ground, and as the street, to them that went over. P Isaiah 52 The promise to bring Israel back to Jerusalem (Fulfilled - Ezra 1:1-3 - 536 BC) Date Written - c. 700 BC/AM 3300 1 2 Awake, awake; put on thy strength, O Zion; put on thy beautiful garments, O

Jerusalem, the holy city: for henceforth there shall no more come into thee the uncircumcisedand the 5 unclean. P 2 2 Shake thyself from the dust; arise, and sit down, O Jerusalem: loose thyself from the bands of thy neck, O captive daughter of Zion. P 3 For thus saith the LORD, 6 Ye have sold yourselves for nought; 2 and ye shall be redeemed without money. P 4 For thus saith the Lord GOD, 7 My people went down aforetime into Egypt to sojourn there; 8 and the Assyrian oppressed them without cause. 5 Now therefore, what have I here, saith the LORD, that my people is taken away for nought? they that rule over them make them to howl, saith the LORD; and my name continually every day is 9 blasphemed. 6 Therefore my people shall know my name: therefore they shall know 2 in that day that I am he that doth speak: behold, it is I. P 7 10 How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him that bringeth 11 GOOD TIDINGS , that publisheth peace; that bringeth good tidings of good, that publisheth salvation; that saith unto Zion, Thy 12 GOD 13 reigneth! P 8 2 Thy watchmen shall lift up the voice; with the voice together shall they sing: for they shall see eye to eye, when the LORD shall bring again Zion. P 9 2 Break forth into joy, 14 sing together, ye waste places of Jerusalem: for the LORD hath comforted his people, he hath redeemed Jerusalem. P 10 2 The LORD hath made bare his holy arm in the eyes of all the nations; and all the ends of the earth shall see the salvation of our God. P

51:21 Israel was “drunk” with their own sins ( but not with wine ). 52:3 Israel didn’t have to go into future captivity ( for nought ). No one has to ruin their life. God’s people go into bondage because they “sell” themselves on the idea that they don’t have to heed the Word of God (Deut 28). Had the Jews in Isaiah’s day heeded his words and yielded to the Scriptures, their descendants would not have gone into future captivity (Jere 35:18-19). No one has to destroy their own future. 52:4 The persecution of Israel by both Egypt and Assyria was unprovoked ( without cause ). The Jews did not provoke the Egyptians or the Assyrians; they provoked God, and in turn God turned His people over to the Egyptians and the Assyrians. 52:6 God warned His people ( my people) , “One way or another you’re going to remember me, even if I have to remind you through the cursing of me among your captors (vs 5).” The lengths God will go in order to get our attention is staggering. 52:7 While Isaiah applies “ good tidings ” to the future return of the exiles from Babylonian captivity, Paul applies this verse to those who preach the Gospel (good tidings or good news). 52:10 When God rolls up His sleeves ( made bare his holy arm ), it’s time to pay attention, because He’s about to get some.
