ISAIAH 49:6
1107
15 I , even I , have spoken; yea, I have called 1 him: 2 I have brought him, and he shall make his way 3 prosperous. PP 16 Come ye near unto ME , hear ye this; I have not spoken in secret from the beginning; 4 from the time that it was, there am I : and now the 5 LORD 6 GOD , and his SPIRIT , hath sent ME . 17 Thus saith the 6 LORD , thy RE- DEEMER , the 7 HOLY O N E of Israel; I am the 6 LORD thy 8 GOD which teacheth thee to profit, which leadeth thee by the way that thou shouldest go. 18 O that thou hadst hearkened to my commandments! then had thy peace been as a river, and thy righteousness as the waves of the sea: 19 Thy seed also had been as the sand, and the offspring of thy bowels like the gravel thereof; his name should not have been cut off nor destroyed from before ME . The promise to bring Israel back to Jerusalem (Fulfilled - Ezra 1:1-3 - 536 BC) 20 2 Go ye forth of Babylon, flee ye from the Chaldeans, with a voice of singing declare ye, tell this, utter it even to the end of the earth; say ye, The LORD hath redeemedhis servant Jacob. P 21 And they thirsted not when he led them through the deserts: 9 he caused the waters to flow out of the rock for them: he clave the ROCK also, and the waters gushed out. 22 10 There is no peace, saith the LORD, unto the wicked.

1 Listen, O isles, unto me; and hearken, ye people, from far; The LORD hath 11 called me from the womb; from the bowels of my mother hath he made mention of my name. 2 And he hath made 12 my mouth like a sharp sword; in the shadow of his hand hath he hid me, and made me a polished shaft; in his quiver hath he hid me; 3 And said unto me, Thou art my ser- vant, O Israel, in whom I will be glorified. 4 Then I said, I have laboured in vain, I have spent my strength for nought, and in vain: yet surely my judgment is with the LORD, and my work with my God. 5 And now, saith the LORD 13 that formed me from the womb to be his servant, to bring Jacob again to him, Though Israel be not gathered, 14 yet shall I be glorious in the eyes of the LORD, and my God shall be my strength. The promise of Gentile enlightenment (Fulfilled - Acts 13:46,47 - AD 45) 6 And HE said, It is a light thing that thou shouldest be my servant to raise up the tribes of Jacob, and to restore the preserved of Israel: 15 I will also give thee 16 for a 17 LIGHT to the Gentiles, that thou mayest be my salvation unto the end of the earth. 48:16 Charles Ryrie in The Ryrie Study Bible notes that the word “ me ” is:
A reference to the preincarnate Christ, who is here associated with the Lord God and the spirit , giving us an OT glimpse of the Trinity. 1
48:21 According to I Corinthians 10:4, the “ ROCK ” here depicts CHRIST . 49:1 In this section of Isaiah’s prophecy, there is a twofold meaning applied to the term “servant” (vs 3,5-6). Isaiah is speaking of himself ( unto me ) as well as the MESSIAH ( my servant, O Israel – vs 3 and Isa 42:1). We know that Isaiah is referring to himself here because he uses the terminology “ my God ” in verses 4-5. The MESSIAH doesn’t have a God; He is God ( Jn 12:34a / Mic 5:2 ). NOTE – Interestingly enough, CHRIST does use this term “ my God ” four different times in the NT (Jn 20:17, Mt 27:46, Mk 15:34 and Rev 3:12), however it deals with His willingness to give up certain aspects of His eternal authority in order to satisfy the payment for the eternality of sin ( Eph 1:17 , Heb 1:9 and Rev 1:6 ). 49:6a The word ( thee ) applies to both Isaiah (Paul and Barnabas applied this verse to themselves – Acts 13:47) and CHRIST . 49:6b God has provided salvation for all ( unto the end of the earth ). This is why we who are saved are to hold up the light of God’s Word so others can see what God has done for them (Mt 5:14-16). 1 Ryrie, Charles C., The Ryrie Study Bible , Chicago, ILL, Moody Press, 1978.
