ISAIAH 28:9

Jacob 1 to take root: 2 Israel shall blossom and bud, and fill the face of the world with fruit. P 7 Hath he smitten him, as he smote those that smote him? or is he slain according to the slaughter of them that are slain by him? The promise of Judah’s fall to Babylon (Fulfilled - II Ki 25 - 586 BC) 8 3 In measure, when it shooteth forth, 4 thou wilt debate with it: he stayeth his rough wind in the day of the east wind. P 9 4 By this therefore shall the iniquity of Jacob be purged; and this is all the fruit to take away his sin; when he maketh all the stones of the altar as chalkstones that are beaten in sunder, the groves and images shall not stand up. P 10 4 Yet the defenced city shall be desolate, and the habitation forsaken, and left like a wilderness: 5 there shall the calf feed, and there shall he lie down, and consume the branches thereof. P 11 4 When the boughs thereof are with- ered, they shall be broken off: the women come, and set them on fire: 6 for it is a people of no understanding: therefore he that made them will not have mercy on them, and he that formed them will shew them no favour. P 12 And it shall come to pass 7 in that day, that the LORD shall beat off from the channel of the river unto the stream of Egypt, and ye shall be gathered one by one, O ye children of Israel. P 13 And it shall come to pass 7 in that day, that the great 8 trumpet shall be blown, and they shall come which were ready to perish in the land of Assyria, and the outcasts in the land of Egypt, and shall worship the LORD in the holy mount at Jerusalem. 1 9 Woe to the 10 crown of pride, to the drunkards of Ephraim, whose glorious beauty is a fading flower, which are on the head of the fat valleys of them that are overcome with wine! P 2 Behold, the Lord hath 11 a mighty and strong one, which as a tempest of hail and a destroying storm, as a flood of mighty waters overflowing, 9 shall cast down to the earth with the hand. P 3 The 10 crown of pride, the drunkards of Ephraim, 9 shall be trodden under feet: P 4 And the glorious beauty, which is on the head of the fat valley, 9 shall be a fading flower, and as the hasty fruit before the summer; which when he that looketh upon it seeth, while it is yet in his hand he eateth it up. P 5 9 In that day shall the LORD OF HOSTS be for a crown of glory, and for a diadem of beauty, unto the residue of his people, P 6 9 And for a spirit of judgment to 12 him that sitteth in judgment, and for strength to them that turn the battle to the gate. P 7 But 13 they also have erred through wine, and through strong drink are out of the way; the priest and the prophet have erred through strong drink, they are swal- lowed up of wine, they are out of the way through strong drink; they err in vision, they stumble in judgment. 8 For all tables are full of vomit and filth- iness, so that there is no place clean. 9 14 Whom shall he teach knowledge? and whom shall he make to understand doctrine? them that are weaned from the milk, and drawn from the breasts.
28:1 This word ( woe ) can easily be translated “doom,” and it is the “doom” of Israel that is being prophesied here. What God gave Israel to serve Him with (grapes, grapejuice) they perverted by making fuel (wine) for their lusts. The goodness ( glorious beauty ) with which God crowned their years became to them a crown of pride . 28:5 To those ( the residue ; Judah ) who shall survive the Assyrian invasion, Isaiah offers a token of hope. In that day , when the Assyrian army is laying Israel waste, the Lord shall be to Judah a crown of glory and a diadem of beauty (II Ki 18-19). 28:9 Those who desire to know God’s Word must “grow up” (get off the milk of the Word – Heb 5:12-14). In order for God’s people to “grow” they must learn via repetition ( precept upon precept, line upon line - vs 10). Matthew Henry in Matthew Henry’s Commentary notes: Nay, it is necessary that the same precept and the same line should be often repeated and inculcated upon us, that we may the better understand them and the more easily recollect them when we have occasion for them. 1 Meaning: God knows that most people fail to learn the first time around. People learn by continual repetition.
