hiding place. P 18 And your 5 covenant with death shall be disannulled, and your agreement with 5 hell shall not stand; 4 when the overflowing scourge shall pass through, then ye shall be trodden down by it. P 19 4 From the time that it goeth forth it shall take you: for morning by morning shall it pass over, by day and by night: and it shall be a vexation only to understand the report. P 20 4 For the bed is shorter than that a man can stretch himself on it: and the covering narrower than that he can wrap himself in it. P 21 4 For the LORD shall rise up as in 14 mount Perazim, he shall be wroth as in the valley of 15 Gibeon, that he may do his work, his strange work; and bring to pass his act, his strange act. P 22 Now therefore be ye not mock- ers, lest your bands be made strong: for I have heard from the Lord GOD of hosts a 16 consumption, even determined upon the whole earth. Like a farmer, God desires to produce the right things in His people 23 Give ye ear, and hear my voice; hear- ken, and hear my speech. 24 Doth the plowman plow all day to sow? doth he open and break the clods of his ground? 25 When he hath made plain the face thereof, doth he not cast abroad the 17 fitches, and scatter the cummin, and cast in the principal wheat and the appointed barley and rie in their place? 26 For his God doth instruct him to dis- cretion, and doth teach him.
10 1 For precept must be upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little: “Tongues” - A sign of rebuke to unbelieving Jews (See - I Corinthians 14:21) 11 2 For with stammering lips and another tongue will he 3 speak to 4 this people. P 12 To whom he said, This is the rest wherewith ye may cause the weary to rest; and this is the refreshing: 2 yet they would not hear. 13 But the word of the LORD was unto them precept upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little; that 5 they might go, and fall backward, and be broken, and snared, and taken. P Israel’s fall - A warning to Judah! 14 Wherefore hear the word of the LORD, ye scornful men, that rule this people which is in Jerusalem. 15 Because ye have said, We have made a 5 covenant with death, and with hell are we at agreement; when the overflowing scourge shall pass through, it shall not come unto us: for we have made lies our refuge, and under falsehood have we hid ourselves: The promise of CHRIST’S First Coming; of HIS rejection (Fulfilled - Lk 2:7,11 - 1 BC & Mt 21:42,44 - AD 32) 16 Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD , 6 Behold, I lay in Zion for a 7 FOUNDA- TION a 8 STONE , a tried stone, a 9 pre- cious 10 CORNER STONE , a 11 SURE FOUNDATION : 12 he that 13 believeth shall not make haste. PP 17 4 Judgment also will I lay to the line, and righteousness to the plummet: and the hail shall sweep away the refuge of lies, and the waters shall overflow the The promise of Israel’s fall to Assyria (Fulfilled - II Ki 17:6 & 18:10,11 - 721 BC)
1. Jere 35:15 2. Quoted in the NT- I Cor 14:21 3. or, “chastise” Note - God will chasten Israel via another tongue, i.e., the Assyrian tongue. 4. Fulfilled - II Ki 17:6 & 18:10-11 (Fall of Israel) 5. or, “a pro-Assyria alliance with Assyria and the grave (hell)” 6. Quoted in the NT - I Pet 2:6 7. Fulfilled - Lk 2:7-11 (Christ’s First Coming) 8. Fulfilled - Mt 21:42,44 & Mk 12:10-11 & Lk 20:17-18 (Christ’s Rejection) (See - Gen 49:24 & Zech 3:9 & 10:4 & I Pet 2:6) 9. I Pet 2:4 10. Eph 2:20 & Psa 118:22 11. II Tim 2:19 & I Cor 3:11 12. Quoted in the NT - Rom 9:33 & 10:11 13. that is, “ believeth on Christ shall not be ashamed or alarmed” 14. II Sam 5:17-25 15. II Sam 5:25 16. or, “an end” - Isa 10:22-23 17. or, “black cummin” Note - Fitches are plants that are used for the purpose of seasoning.
27 For the fitches are not threshed with a threshing instrument, neither is a cart wheel turned about upon the cummin; but the fitches are beaten out with a staff, and the cummin with a rod. 28:11 Because Israel failed to listen to the repetitious teachings of the prophets, God would speak to them through another tongue (the Assyrians). Judgment for Israel would be inevitable. NOTE – This is the only verse in the entire Old Testament that refers to the sign gift “tongues.” According to I Corinthians 14:1, the sign gift “tongues” was used by God to warn the unbelieving Jews of an impending foreign invasion. The sign gift “tongues” has nothing to do with believers (I Cor 14:22). 28:13 Woe to the believer that fails to learn by repetition. 28:15 Judah tried to escape the Assyrian invasion by making an alliance with Assyria ( death ). In contrast to their covenant, God promises Judah a better covenant, a covenant with the CORNERSTONE . 28:16 As humans, CHRIST can either become our CORNERSTONE or our STUMBLING STONE (Isa 8:14/I Pet 2:6-8). The choice is ours. 28:20 What Isaiah meant was –just because Israel is going to be destroyed by Assyria doesn’t mean that a pro-Assyrian alliance is going to protect you (Judah).
