7:23 Mentioned one time in Scripture, “ a thousand silverlings ” was an undetermined amount of silver. 8:1 Isaiah was now given the name of his second son (Isa 7:14-16), and told to write it down. He was to be named, Maher-shalal- hash-baz , meaning, “swift to plunder; quick to spoil.” His very name foretold the fall of Syria and Northern Israel. Like Isaiah’s firstborn son, Shear-jashub, whose name meant, “a remnant will return” (Isa 7:3), his second born son would also become a sign to Southern Judah. 8:2 The two “ witnesses ” here (Uriah the priest, and Zechariah) were probably summoned by Isaiah to witness the circumcision and naming of the child. Within a year of Maher-shalal-hash-baz’s birth, the spoils of the two capitals (Damascus and Samaria) would be carried off to Assyria (vs 4). 8:3 Isaiah’s wife was also a prophet (or, prophetess ). There were a number of prophetesses in the Bible, some good (Miriam - Exo 15:20, Deborah - Judg 4:4, Huldah - II Ki 22:14 & II Chro 34:22, Isaiah’s wife - Isa 8:3, and Anna - Lk 2:36 ), some not so good (Noadiah - Neh 6:14, and Jezebel - Rev 2:20). NOTE – Women can certainly be called into the ministry as well as men. The only difference between a man’s calling and a woman’s calling is that a woman is not called to a spiritual leadership position (I Tim 2:11-14 and Rev 2:18-23). According to Genesis 3:1-5, Satan was unsuccessful in his attempt to get man to sin, so he went after the woman. When her fall led to man’s fall (Gen 3:6-7), Satan understood the power of a woman that day, and from that day till this day, Satan has appeared as a woman in order to deceive mankind. Is not the false religious system of the world, which is controlled by Satan, referred to as a “woman” (Rev 17:1-3)? Even God understands the power of a woman over a man (I Pet 3:1). Sadly, there are some denominations within Christendom that allow women to lead spiritually, but there are no scriptural grounds for their position. The prophetess Miriam may have had a spiritual calling upon her life, but she was never called to lead spiritually, and when she tried, God gave her leprosy (Num 12:1-15). The prophetess Deborah may have been called to be a judge in Israel (women are definitely qualified to lead governmentally), but she was never called to lead spiritually, and when a spiritual battle against the enemies of Israel ensued, she recruited Barak (a man) to lead the way (Judg 4:4-6). 8:6 Although King Ahaz secretly sided with Assyria, there were those within Southern Judah ( this people ) that wanted to side with Syria (Rezin) and Northern Israel (Pekah, Remaliah’s son) against the Assyrians. According to Isaiah, both alliances were wrong (vs 7-12). The only one they needed to side with was the LORD OF HOSTS (vs 13). If they did not trust Him, then the one who had been their Rock (Deut 32:4) would now become their Stone that causes people to stumble (vs 14-15 / Rom 9:31-33 and I Pet 2:6-8).
