his wings shall fill the breadth of thy land, O 1 IMMANU-EL . P 9 2 Associate yourselves, O ye people, and ye shall be broken in pieces; and give ear, all ye of far countries: gird yourselves, and ye shall be broken in pieces; gird yourselves, and ye shall be broken in pieces. P 10 Take counsel together, and it shall come to nought; speak the word, 3 and it shall not stand: for God is with us. 11 For the LORD spake thus to me with a strong hand, and instructed me that I should not walk in the way of this people, saying, 12 Say ye not, A confederacy, to all them to whom this people shall say, A confederacy; neither fear ye their fear, nor be afraid. 13 Sanctify the LORD OF HOSTS him- self; 4 and let him be your fear, and let him be your dread. The promise of CHRIST’S First Coming; of HIS rejection (Fulfilled - Lk 2:7,11 - 1 BC & Mt 21:42,44 - AD 32) 14 And 5 HE shall be for a sanctuary; but for 6 a 7 STONE of stumbling and for a 8 ROCK of offence to both the houses of Israel, for a gin and for a snare to the inhabitants of Jerusalem. PP 15 2 And many among them shall stumble, and fall, 9 and be broken, and be snared, and be taken. P 16 Bind up the testimony, seal the law among my disciples. 17 And I will wait upon the LORD, that hideth his face from the house of Jacob, and I will look for him. The promise of unity that CHRIST would have with His brethren (See - Heb 2:13) 18 Behold, 10 I and the 11 children whom the LORD hath given me are for signs and for wonders in Israel from the LORD of hosts, which dwelleth in mount Zion. P 19 Andwhen they shall say unto you, Seek unto them that have 12 familiar spirits, and unto wizards that peep, and that mutter: should not a people seek unto their
God? for the living to the dead? 20 To the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them. 21 And they shall pass through it, hardly bestead and hungry: and it shall come to pass, that when they shall be hungry, they shall fret themselves, and curse their king and their God, and look upward. 22 And they shall look unto the earth; 2 and behold trouble and darkness, dimness of anguish; and they shall be driven to darkness. P Isaiah 9 The promise of CHRIST’S earthly ministry (Fulfilled - Mt 4:15,16 - AD 29) (Note - This portion of Isaiah’s prophecy took place in the 9th year of King Ahaz’s co-reign with King Jotham and the 17th year of King Pekah’s reign) Date Written - c. 732 BC/AM 3268 1 Nevertheless the dimness shall not be such as was in her vexation, when at the first 13 he lightly afflicted 14 the land 15 of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, 16 and after-ward did more grievously afflict her by the way of the sea, beyond Jordan, in Galilee of the nations. P P 2 14 The people that walked in darkness 15 have seen a great 17 LIGHT : they that dwell in the land of the shadow of death, upon them hath the light shined. P The promise of a Kingdom where 3 18 THOU hast multiplied the nation, and not increased the joy: they joy before thee according to the joy in harvest, and as men rejoice when they divide the spoil. P 18 4 For THOU hast broken the yoke of his burden, and the staff of his shoulder, the rod of his oppressor, 19 as in the day of Mid ian. P 5 For every battle of the warrior is with confused noise, and garments rolled in blood; 18 but this shall be with burning and fuel of fire. P CHRIST will rule (Fulfilled - Rev 20:4,6)

8:19 Sadly, during times of great distress, instead of turning to God, God’s people will often turn to witches (familiar spirits) and wizards (soothsayers). Isaiah warns, “Should the people of God consult the dead on behalf of the living? Why should they consult the dead when God is alive and well?” 9:1 a “ Nevertheless ” means verse 1 continues the thought of the previous chapter (8:22). 9:1 b The “ dimness ” (Israel’s rejection of God) was especially rampant in the northern tribal areas of Zebulun and Naphtali, which would suffer grievously under Tiglath-Pileser III of Assyria later on that year (II Ki 15:29). 9:2 To them who had walked in the “ shadow of death ” was the promise made of a great LIGHT ( CHRIST - Mt 4:15-16). 9:3 This word ( not ) is better rendered “ it has .” Thus, the coming of the great LIGHT (vs 2), “ it has ” increased the joy…as men rejoice when they divide the spoil. When CHRIST comes to set up His Kingdom, He will break the yoke of Israel’s enemies (vs 4) and put away war (vs 5) (Isa 2:1-4 and Mic 4:1-3).
