ISAIAH 7:2
ISAIAH 7:20
1056
2 And it was told the house of David, saying, Syria is confederate with Ephraim. And his heart was moved, and the heart of his people, as the trees of the wood are moved with the wind. 3 Then said the LORD unto Isaiah, Go forth now to meet Ahaz, thou, and 1 Shear- jashub thy son, at the end of the conduit of the upper pool in the highway of the fuller’s field; 4 And say unto him, Take heed, and be quiet; fear not, neither be fainthearted for the two tails of these 2 smoking firebrands, for the fierce anger of Rezin with Syria, and of the son of Remaliah. 5 Because Syria, Ephraim, and the son of Remaliah, have taken evil counsel against thee, saying, 6 Let us go up against Judah, and vex it, and let us make a breach therein for us, and set a king in the midst of it, even the son of Tabeal: The promise of Israel’s defeat to Assyria (Fulfilled - around 670 BC) 7 Thus saith the Lord GOD, 3 It shall not stand, neither shall it come to pass. P 8 For the head of Syria is Damascus, and the head of Damascus is Rezin; 3 and within threescore and five years shall Ephraim be broken, that it be not a people. P 9 And the head of Ephraim is Samaria, and the head of Samaria is Remaliah’s son. If ye will not believe, 3 surely ye shall not be established. P 10 Moreover the LORD spake again unto Ahaz, saying, 11 Ask thee a sign of the LORD thy God; ask it either in the depth, or in the height above. 12 But Ahaz said, I will not ask, neither will I tempt the LORD. 13 And 4 he said, Hear ye now, O house
of David; Is it a small thing for you to weary men, but will ye weary my God also? The promise of CHRIST’S First Coming (Fulfilled - Lk 2:7,11 - 1 BC) 14 Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; 5 Behold, a 6 virgin shall conceive, and bear a 7 SON , and shall call HIS name 8 IMMANU-EL . P 15 Butter and honey shall 9 he eat, that he may know to refuse the evil, and choose the good. The promise of death to King Pekah and King Rezin before Isaiah’s child can grow (Fulfilled - II Ki 15:30 - 731 BC & II Ki 16:9 - 732 BC) 16 For before the 9 child shall know to refuse the evil, and choose the good, the land that thou abhorrest shall be forsaken of 10 both her kings. P The promise of Assyria to distress Judean cities (Fulfilled - II Chro 28:20,21 - 732 BC) 17 The LORD shall bring upon thee, and upon thy people, and upon thy father’s house, days that have not come, 11 from the day that Ephraim departed from Judah; 12 even the king of Assyria. P 18 12 And it shall come to pass in that day, that the LORD shall hiss for the fly that is in the uttermost part of the rivers of Egypt, and for the bee that is in the land of Assyria. P 19 12 And they shall come, and shall rest all of them in the desolate valleys, and in the holes of the rocks, and upon all thorns, and upon all bushes. P 20 12 In the same day shall the Lord shave with a 13 razor that is hired, namely, by them beyond the river, by the king of Assyria, the head, and the hair of the feet: and it shall also consume the beard. 7:3 After the attack upon King Ahaz and Southern Judah, God sent ( Go forth now ) Isaiah and his firstborn son, Shear-jashub, (whose name means “a remnant will return”) to encourage King Ahaz to repent of his wicked ways and to trust the Lord for future deliverance (Isa 7:3-9). Nevertheless, Ahaz refused Isaiah’s offer and would not respond properly to God’s question (Isa 7:10-12) because he had already hired Assyria to protect him against Syria and Northern Israel (II Ki 16:7-9). 7:6 The goal of the Syrian-Samarian alliance was to remove King Ahaz from the Judean throne and to replace him with another, “ even the son of Tabeal ” (vs 5-6). This action, however, would have brought the dynasty of David to a close, thus corrupting the lineage to Christ, the promised OTMESSIAH (Mt 1:9 and II Ki 15:38 ), and the Lord would have none of that (vs 7-9). Since the fall of man in the Garden of Eden, and the promise of salvation via the Gospel of Christ, Satan has sought to keep the promised OT MESSIAH from entering the world ( Gen 3:15a ). 7:14 a The birth of Isaiah’s second son (Maher-shalal-hash-baz, whose name means, “in making speed to spoil, he hastens the prey” - Isa 8:1-4) would become “ a sign ,” i.e., symbolic of a greater SON (Immanuel), who would be born 700 years later in Bethlehem (Mic 5:2/Mt 1:18–2:6). 7:14 b The term “ SON ” was another name given to the promised MESSIAH to come (Jn 1:41,49). It was a recognized fact that when the MESSIAH came, He would come as the SON OF GOD (God Himself in the flesh - Jn 1:14 & 12:34 a , I Tim 3:16, I Jn 1:1-2 & 4:2-3 and II Jn 7).
