Heman’s name means faithful, perhaps an allusion to the fact that he was a descendant of the faithful sons of Korah that did not join their father in rebellion against Moses. (Num 26:11) He was a grandson of the great prophet Samuel and carried a prophetic heritage that expressed itself in songs of worship. (1 Chron 6:33) His ministry was marked by his prophetic insight as a ‘seer’ and he was especially gifted to exalt the Lord. The chief direction of his prophetic song was from ‘man unto God.’ In addition to a large family of 14 sons, he had 3 daughters representing the perfect age of grace where God is using women as equals in worship and prophecy. Heman, perhaps in conjunction with his sons, became authors of 10 of the psalms of the Bible. Psalms 42, 44, 45-49, 84, 85, 87. Asaph, Jeduthun and Heman must have been in their younger years when David appointed them to lead the worship of the nation as they presided over the dedication of Solomon’s Temple years after the great King’s death.
