The Restored Authority of the Church

In 1 John 3:8, the apostle John points out that Jesus came to

“destroy the works of Satan.” Through Christ, a new marshal

has come into town — with the authority to confront Satan’s

power and cancel his demonic influence over people and over

nations. In Luke 10, we see that when the 70 disciples returned,

after Jesus sent them out to preach in Judean towns, they

exulted that they had been able to cast out demons. Jesus said

this:

I have given you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy; nothing will harm you. (Luke 10:19)

Satan is indeed a force on earth today — but praise God, so is

the church. Jesu s tells us that we now have the power to “bind

and loose, to attack the strongholds of Satan, and to open the

doors of heaven” for people and nations (Matt. 16:1-20; 18:18

19). As God awakens His church to the authority he has given

it, Satan will face the battle of his life — knowing he will

eventually lose.
