out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before Him He endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider Him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart. (Heb. 12:1-3).

I have drawn comfort and inspiration from the biographies of

great believers in past generations, and from the lives of those

who are around me today. This is why in Chapter 11 the writer

of Hebrews reminded these Jewish believers to reflect on the

lives of Old Testament saints, as well as on whomever they

knew was presently living a victorious life of faith. Being

conscious of this “cloud of witnesses , ” models of enduring faith,

would inspire courage and tenacity.

All believers vitally need to hear fresh testimonies from ordinary

people — people of faith — who are living extraordinary lives in

painful and challenging times. The Holy Spirit will witness to our

hearts that what God did through them, He can do through us.

Where we place our focus in times of testing is important to

overcoming life.

Jesus remains our greatest model for enduring and overcoming

faith. We must “fix” our eyes on him, the writer of Hebrews says,

refusing to look away from His example. Moreover, Jesus is the

author of great faith. He perfects it in our lives by the power of

the Holy Spirit’s work in us.
