The Life of Christ
This is a different appearance than how Jesus looked during the 40 days after the cross.
• Here in Mt. 17:2 Jesus displays His usual appearance in heaven, and what He will look like when He comes again.
• Heb. 10:20 says that His flesh served as a veil covering the glory of God.
Lk. 9:30 And behold, two men were talking with Him; and they were Moses and Elijah,
Both of these men had rather supernatural exits from this world.
• Elijah was caught up in a whirlwind (2 Ki. 2:11).
• Deut. 34:6 says that God buried Moses, suggesting that Moses possibly died and then returned to life and ascended into heaven.
The reason for both of their untraditional departures from this life suggests their missions on earth were not yet over.
• They not only appear here but will perhaps someday prophesy in Jerusalem during the time of the Antichrist as the two witnesses of Rev. 11.
Their presence also represents a fascinating aspect of Jesus’ second coming:
• Moses died and possibly resurrected, representing all of the dead in Christ who will arise when the Lord returns.
• Elijah never did die, symbolizing those alive and remaining unto the coming of the Lord.
Lk. 9:31 “…who, appearing in glory, were speaking of His departure which He was about to accomplish at Jerusalem.”
One of the main reasons they came was to encourage Jesus about His upcoming death in Jerusalem, now just months away.
• Jesus’ personal concern regarding the crucifixion was growing, and the presence of other elite holy men would serve as a strong encouragement to Him.
Lk. 9:32-33 Now Peter and his companions had been overcome with sleep; but when they were fully awake, they saw His glory and the two men standing with Him. 33 And it came about, as these were parting from Him, Peter said to Jesus, “Master, it is good for us to be here; and let us make three tabernacles: one for You, and one for Moses, and one for Elijah” — not realizing what he was saying.
Why would Peter want to build three tabernacles?
• This event may have occurred during the Feast of Tabernacles.
• During that feast the people made small tents in Jerusalem to live in while in attendance.
• This provides another confirmation that this story in many ways symbolizes the return of Christ, the ultimate fulfillment of the Feast of Tabernacles.
