The Life of Christ
Jesus never answered Peter’s question, and instead simply ignored Peter.
• Every once in a while, the Lord seems to ignore things we have asked Him.
• We remember God’s response to Moses’ request that God kill him (Num. 11:15). God ignored him but did arrange 70 elders to help carry Moses’ emotional load.
Lk. 9:34 And while he was saying this, a cloud formed and began to overshadow them; and they were afraid as they entered the cloud.
This cloud was most likely the golden Shekinah glory of God, which appeared to the shepherds at the birth of Jesus, and it will once again manifest when Jesus ascends back to heaven.
• Rev. 1:7 reads, “Behold, He is coming with clouds. . .”
Lk. 9:35 And a voice came out of the cloud, saying, “This is My Son, My Chosen One; listen to Him!”
The Father spoke in order to instruct Peter, James, and John.
• In the coming years there would be much debate as to how the Old Testament Law and Prophets would fit into this new Gospel message.
• So right here, in front of Moses, the Lawgiver, and Elijah, representing the Prophets, the Father tells the disciples to hear Jesus — not Moses or Elijah!
The fact that the Father spoke out of the cloud is in accordance to how He would occasionally speak out of the cloud that followed the children of Israel through the wilderness.
• The cloud would always hover above the tabernacle, but on certain occasions it would drop down and sit upon the tabernacle, followed by the voice of the Lord (Ex. 16:10).
SECTION 122
Mk. 9:9 And as they were coming down from the mountain, He gave them orders not to relate to anyone what they had seen, until the Son of Man should rise from the dead. Had they told others it wouldn't have been believed. • Since Peter, James and John had already each demonstrated their superior ability over the others to believe, they were privileged to witness this amazing sight. Mk. 9:10 And they seized upon that statement, discussing with one another what rising from the dead might mean.
Jesus’ dying was still hard to understand, but to rise from the dead was beyond comprehension; there was no precedent for this.
SECTION 123
Mt. 17:11 And He answered and said, “Elijah is coming and will restore all things;”
