Street Stories - A Ringside Seat To Over 4 Decades Of Taking Jesus To The Streets Of The World
On a side note, Pastor Troy Bohn in Amarillo, Texas, had called us to tell us he had a bus he wanted to donate for Mexico. Bobby braved the freezing cold weather in the Panhandle of Texas to drive the bus to California and then into Mexico. Troy’s brother Ray Bohn and his son Matthew Bohn drove most of the way. The bus had no heat, and they were wrapping themselves in blankets and trying what they could to keep from freezing. The gaps in the bus doors were letting the freezing air blow freely into that bus. When Bobby parked that old school bus in our driveway, I’m sure the neighbors were hoping we were not planning to keep it there. The bus came the year that we had 130 people on our outreach team. What a trip that was! The agents at the border crossing into Tijuana, Mexico, aren’t exactly known for being honest. They’ve been known to take tips or to fine people for things they bring into the country and then allow these people to pay their fines to them personally. Or so we’ve heard. We had the bus loaded with people and with literally thousands of toys that year. At the border the guards decide who they will stop to search and who they will allow to go through the border crossing. They let you know if you should stop or go by either giving you a green light or giving you a red light. Naturally, if you get a red light, you had better STOP. Wouldn’t you know that we got stopped at the border in that old school bus! We quickly moved children on the team to have them sit on top of the boxes that lined the aisle of the bus. When the two guards, armed with military weapons, climbed onto the bus they began to have a serious discussion with each other.
