Pastor Anthony had been holding church in a tent. I remember Sondra raising money for his tent. It touched my heart because my dad, Alton Hayes, had been a tent preacher when I was a small child. Bobby and I were happy to be a part of giving to such an amazing cause. A while later, Sondra raised money again for a new tent after Pastor Anthony’s original tent had been destroyed in a storm. After a long battle with cancer, Sondra passed away. At that time, I was the last remaining active Board member in her ministry. The day I received the call from her daughter, Felicia, that her mom had passed to eternity I realized I had lost my dear friend and ministry colleague. I knew I would miss hearing her asking me over and over to go with her to South Africa! She passed away on September 21, 2016. We were so hoping Sondra would recover from cancer and be able to return to South Africa. I was working trying to tie up some loose ends of Sondra’s ministry. Bobby and I had our ministry to do. How could I add more to what we were already doing and how would that fit together? For years Sondra had sponsored “Happy Birthday, Jesus” parties for children in South Africa. She loved to provide Christian books, toys, and sweet treats for the children. So many of the children had so little. She wanted these precious children to grow up loving Jesus. Sondra began sending books and toys to South Africa in 1992 when, sadly, Felicia and Sondra lost Anna in a tragic car accident.
