Street Stories - A Ringside Seat To Over 4 Decades Of Taking Jesus To The Streets Of The World

I don’t want to give the impression that we are just performing social services for the homeless. It is far deeper than that. I love Matthew 25:35,36: 35 “ For I was hungry, and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty, and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, 36 I needed clothes, and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me. ” When we feed and clothe the poor or visit the sick or prisoners, we are doing this as unto the Lord Jesus. People love to know that someone cares about them. I love that saying, “people don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care. ” We soon realized we were going to have to prove ourselves and our motives to the citizens of Skid Row. They have trust issues. Many have a hardness about them from being on the streets for so long or from being in prison. But they all have that void that can only be filled by a relationship with Jesus. It didn’t take long for us to become known as the Chili Dog People! I remember one man was so impressed because we served onions with the chili dogs! It took me a few minutes to realize that was a big deal to them. They said at times people would just bring plain hot dogs with no condiments. They were grateful to have something to eat, but they seemed to think they were having a pretty highfalutin meal when we had all the trimmings. Not to criticize anyone who is making an effort to do the Will of God and feed people but so many times people are fed expired food and stale bread. Perhaps it was a step above them eating out of the garbage cans. The conviction in our hearts is to serve fresh food to all our friends in need.
