Street Stories - A Ringside Seat To Over 4 Decades Of Taking Jesus To The Streets Of The World
I knew she would think that was a weird thing for me to say that would get her attention that something was up. But I didn’t want her to worry about the possibility we were about to be interrogated and potentially arrested there in Padang. I told her I loved her and couldn’t wait to get back home. After that phone call, the military police set things in motion. Detectives entered the hotel and gathered us all up in the lobby. First of all, they began to question Brother Donny. They asked him questions about where he lived, why was he in Padang, who were these Americans he was with. Similarly, they questioned Pastor Steve and pushed him to give them information regarding our disaster relief team. They wanted to know why we had been in Padang Pariaman giving out relief supplies and food. Mostly, they were concerned about the Bibles we had distributed to an area where many of the villagers had never seen a Bible or heard the Name of Jesus. After some interrogation, the detectives decided they were going to demand we surrender our passports to them. But we knew if we gave up our passports, the possibility of us being able to return on a flight to the USA was diminished. Rudy said, “We won’t surrender our original passports, but we will give you copies of them.” That seemed to suffice, so the detectives took us to a photocopy store and waited for us to copy our passports.
