Street Stories - A Ringside Seat To Over 4 Decades Of Taking Jesus To The Streets Of The World
Rudy had served as a Recon Marine in Desert Storm. He had been trained for situations like this. So, he quietly taught us how to photocopy our passports, but to jiggle them around just a little on the copier glass so our information would come out a little blurry on the copies. When we returned to the hotel, the detectives and police had decided we could no longer be in Padang, and we were ordered to leave Indonesia immediately. We only had about one hour to pack up our things from our hotel rooms and head to the airport to fly back to Jakarta, then depart Indonesia. As the detectives watched us pack up, Rudy came up to me and handed me an ice-cold Sprite in a bottle. Amazed, I asked him, “Where did you get that?” He replied, “Just because we are in a forced evacuation, that doesn’t mean you can’t have a Sprite.” We loaded up our vehicles, jumped in and headed back to the local airport in Padang. The detectives and police wanted to be sure we could find our way, so they followed close behind us. We made it to the airport and checked our bags through security. We had given out all the Bibles and all the gospel tracts we had brought with us. As we left the security area and were just about to head toward our plane, everything changed drastically. About a dozen uniformed military policemen came crashing through the front doors of the Padang airport on a mission to grab us before we were able to depart back to Jakarta.
