Street Stories - A Ringside Seat To Over 4 Decades Of Taking Jesus To The Streets Of The World

I guess humor helps in life-threatening situations, and the situation we were thrust into was definitely life threatening. As our van was crippling along and the kidnappers on motorbikes with the rocks were fast approaching, God gave us a way of escape. He always gives His children a way of escape from their enemies. This was no exception. As our van died in the middle of the road, we looked up ahead and saw a small house and, in the driveway, sat a beautiful, jet-black ¾ ton pickup truck. We all grabbed what of our belongings we could from the van and ran like the wind to that house. We yelled out for someone, and the owner came outside to see what all the ruckus was about. We told him, “We need a ride to Padang. If you will take us in your truck, we will pay you. It’s an emergency.” He agreed to drive us to Padang, and we all piled into the back of the truck. As we knew the kidnappers had to be close, we told him, “Hurry! Hurry!” Mohammed had come over to the truck with us. We encouraged him to jump in and escape the kidnappers. He told us he could not go because he had to stay with the rental van as he was an employee of the rental company. We asked him, “What will happen when the kidnappers get here if you don’t go with us?” He took his thumb and crossed it across his neck making a sign of having his throat cut.

We told him that was a choice he would have to make, but that we were getting away as fast as we could.
