My head was spinning. I’m not sure if it was still the vertigo, or if the events that just transpired had my head spinning. Our driver was a Muslim, and his name was Mohammed. We loaded up in the van and proceeded to drive out of the airport. As we slowed down in congested traffic, a young woman dressed very modestly with a shawl over her head and carrying a baby, came up to the van and tapped on our window. I expected her to ask us for money or food, but what she did next was unexpected. When I opened my side window to hear what she was saying, she handed me a homemade DVD and said to me, “Please get the truth out.” Then she abruptly walked away. I did not know what she meant, but I would soon find out. The poorly packaged DVD she had given me was an underground video taken from an airplane flown by the Myanmar military junta that was flying high above the area, surveying the damage and casualties from Cyclone Nargis. These DVD’s were highly classified because the footage filmed from the air showed miles and miles of homes and land completely destroyed. Shockingly, the videos also showed mass casualties of men and women who had drowned, swept away by the storm. There was also recorded scenes of dozens and dozens of babies, side by side, face down in the water, who had been killed in the cyclone and swept away. The Myanmar government tried to conceal these high numbers of casualties from the rest of the world because they hid the enormous numbers of dead from the prying eyes of the free world.
