Everywhere we went in Russia, people seemed genuinely excited and blessed to receive a Bible written in their own Russian language that they could read and share with others. I thought back on the newspaper article I had read before arriving in Russia that talked about people tearing pages from the Bible and distributing one page per person to their friends and family. Although we had given out so many Bibles and for the most part people thankfully received them, there was one instance that was markedly different that I have never forgotten. It is indelibly etched in my memory and my heart. Our time in Russia was coming to an end, so our entire group went to St. Basil’s Cathedral, one of Russia’s most popular cultural symbols. It is located in Red Square in the center of Moscow. I was surprised to discover that this beautiful cathedral that reminded me of several colorful ice cream cones standing by each other, had actually been built in the mid- 1950’s on orders of Ivan the Terrible. Saint Basil’s Cathedral is such an iconic structure. Throughout many years, I can remember Russian military marches and parades that showed Russia’s military strength to the world had been conducted in Red Square. I was in awe knowing I was standing in a world renown location with such a historical backdrop. I walked all around Red Square asking the Lord who should I give the last of my Bibles to.
