They told me, “If we can pay the ticket here on the spot, the police will let us go. If not, it’s possible we will be arrested.” I asked them, “How much is the ticket?” They told me, “To pay the ticket we must give them 2,000 Rubles. Then they will let us go. ” I calculated that was just over $20 in US dollars. I told them, “I will pay it.” I reached into my bag and pulled out 2,000 Rubles and handed it to them. While I stayed in the car, they took the money back to the police. I was hoping and praying the police would let us go without further investigation. I was thinking what they might ascertain regarding me being a US citizen who was out at night beyond curfew and in a restricted area beyond what was granted to our group. None of that sounded very promising. Suddenly, the bright lights glaring from behind us went dark, and the police drove away. My friends came back to the car, happy that the event ended without incident. I asked them if I could have the ticket the police had issued as a souvenir. They laughed and handed me the Russian speeding ticket. I carried it in my wallet for years as a reminder of that crazy night. I got back to the hotel and entered through the one door that was open and guarded by armed military. By the Grace of God, I was not stopped or questioned. I made it up to our room where Pastor Dwayne was already enjoying a deep sleep. I climbed into bed excited to see what God was going to do tomorrow. He always has exciting plans.
