Focus on Groups: St. Martha’s Guild and the OLF Building Committee
Regarding chapel management, the group system falls into two broad areas: the temporal (aka building), and the spiritual (aka Catholic culture and the Liturgical year). The building aspect of group management encompasses things associated with the physical plant. Lots of groups tackle various jobs–like church cleaning–but this month’s focus is on the unsung members of the OLF Building Committee. Since our move in 2020, this group has been overseeing the renovation of the building so that, once completed, it is a reflection of a truly Catholic edifice; not an easy process by any means. They, along with the Holy Name Society, also take on projects that help bring OLFsters to a place where true Christian community can blossom. Which brings us to the spiritual aspect. Where would Western Civilization be without the Catholic Church? All national cultures have contributed to building the world in areas like the arts and sciences largely because of the influence of Catholicism. These cultural traditions celebrate the Liturgical Year in various ways, and are all ways that keep our eyes and hearts on Our Lord, the Blessed Mother, and the saints. At OLF, the St. Martha’s Guild brings these cultural contributions alive by hosting themed events throughout the year to heighten our awareness and deepen our understanding of the Faith. The All Saints Revue, Las Posadas, and the Lenten Soup Suppers are among the activities hosted by the Guild. Some members of both groups are parents (many of young families) who volunteer their time from an already busy life for the benefit of our OLF community. Thank you to them and all our committee volunteers!

Capital Campaign Fund Raisers Remaining on pledges: $68,118; Donations: $940,395*; (*Donations amount does NOT include the $200,000 realized from the sale of the Portland property) The Blue and White Banquet Saturday, June 8th! (details pg 11) As mentioned in the May bulletin, with the gate access upgrade, attention now turns to replacing the building’s exterior doors. The Building Committee is continuing to look at viable options, and should have a decision soon. This will not be inexpensive, and the Capital Campaign Committee would be happy to hear if anyone has ideas on fundraising activities, and are willing to spearhead it. A Word About Stipends As a matter of justice, our priests should be compensated for activities performed outside of bringing the Mass to us. Here are recommendations. ❖ Mass Offering: $20 (include intentions with payment and mail/give to priest or give to servers/ushers who will make sure Father gets it) ❖ Sick Calls: $25 ❖ Baptisms: $25-$50; server stipend optional ❖ Funerals and Weddings: $100; $10-$20 to each server ❖ Organist: $50. Choir: No stipend recommendation To reiterate, these are recommendations only and not required, but appreciated. Certainly be as generous as you are able to our priests and their helpers! Ladies Book Club: The next meeting will be June 12 . They are finishing “A Band of Brigands in 1793”. Contact: kristi.hamilton@thmail.io Teen Book Club: Meets on 4th Sunday after the 2nd Mass. (June 23) This month’s book is “The Magician’s Nephew”, which is part of the Chronicles of Narnia series by CS Lewis. Questions perrymatthew_@hotmail.com Men’s Book Club: The next meeting in June; TBD. They are completing and discussing Book 3 of CS Lewis’ Space Trilogy, “That Hideous Strength”. Renovation Update
The Building Committee continues to be busy with upgrades and improvements outside. Since May, the parking lot has been sealed and fresh lines painted for parking spots. They even added ELEVEN extra spots. Additionally, more structure has been created to the playground with painted lines for both hopscotch and volleyball. The basketball area has seen a facelift as well. All of this is great, but it will necessitate a change in the parking pattern: *** Those attending 1st Mass are asked to please park at the back of the church beyond the slash lines on top of the playground lines, so that after 2nd Mass those spots “should” be empty which will allow the children free and clear movement for their new activities. June Reflection: The Sacred Heart of Jesus
Devotion to the Sacred Heart has a long history in the Church. To better understand its richness and our pathetic response (of which Our Lord has complained) consider the symbolism in, as St. Margaret Mary Alacoque calls it, this “Heart of Flesh”: ● The Fire can be understood to represent the tie to the Old Testament in which the highest form of sacrifice was a burnt offering (as in Abraham’s intention to offer
New York . The Big Apple. Home to the Yankees & Mets. Broadway.
Isaac). Christ, out of His burning love for us offers Himself to His Father for our redemption. Sadly, our response has been (according to Our Lord) “coldness and indifference”. ● The Light, a symbol of His divinity. In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. And the light shines in the darkness; and the darkness grasped it not. (Jn 1:4-5) ● The Spear which pierces His side and into His heart, from which flows blood and water. Church doctors like Sts. Augustine and John Chrysostom liken this to the graces in the Sacraments Christ instituted for us, yet Our Lord sorrowfully observes our ingratitude for them, especially the Eucharist, by “the irreverences and sacrileges…wherewith He is treated in this Sacrament of love” . ● The Crown of Thorns: our individual sins for which Christ suffered and died. Francis P. Donnelly, in his book The Heart of the Gospel: Traits of the Sacred Heart (1911), however, explains the crown is also a sign of victory: From the weapons of His enemy, from cross and crown and opened Heart, our conquering leader fashioned a trophy which was the best testimony of His love”. ● The Cross, which is smaller in comparison to the Heart, and sitting on top of it surrounded by flames, emphasizes how this Heart of love is “forever supporting the weight of the Cross” (Donnelly)
