God And His Word - A Question And Answer Approach To Understanding The Bible

thou liest down, and when thou risest up. Deuteronomy 6:6, 7. 9. HOW SHOULD PARENTS TRAIN THEIR CHILDREN? Some thoughts from Proverbs: 3:11 - Chastening is a sign of real parental love! 13:24 - God says you hate your son if you spare the rod! 19:18 - Chasten while they are young, and there is still hope! 22:6 – Properly trained, the child in later life won't depart from God. 22:15 - The rod drives out foolishness; it breaks the stubborn will! 23:3 - Beat with the rod, he will not die (just be uncomfortable)! 23:14 - The rod (in proper discipline) will deliver your child from hell. 29:15 - The rod and reproof brings wisdom; childist self- will, shame! 29:17 - Rest and delight will come when children are disciplined! 10. AGAINST WHAT EVIL SHOULD FATHERS GUARD? "Fathers, provoke not your children to anger, lest they be discouraged." Colossians 3:21. The Scriptures listed under No. 9 should not be interpreted to mean physical abuse. Also, carnal anger - especially when there is no justifiable reason - will only frustrate the child. Firm, consistent discipline will direct the will of the child, bringing him into proper subjection, and yet allow him to develop a sense of duty and what is right. Time spent in explanation, prayer, proper fun, etc., will counterbalance the rod of discipline and produce wholesome young people. 229
