Dishonest action must not replace our love for others and our trust in God's provision. 29. WHAT IS THE NINTH COMMANDMENT? "Thou shalt not bear false witness against neighbor." Exodus 20:16. 30. WHAT DOES GOD FORBID IN THE NINTH COMMANDMENT? A. God forbids us to make any untrue statement against our neighbor in court. Proverbs 19:5; Matthew 26:59-61; 1 Kings 21:13. B. God forbids us to belie our neighbor; that is, to lie about him or lie to him or withhold from him truth in order to harm. Proverbs 19:5; Ephesians 4:25. C. God forbids us to betray our neighbor; that is, to reveal his secrets. Proverbs 11:13. D. God forbids us to slander or defame our neighbor; that is, to speak evil of him and thus injure or destroy his good name. James 4:11; Psalms 50:19-22; Luke 6:37; Matthew 18:15. E. God forbids us to have evil thoughts against our neighbor or to plot against him. Zechariah 8:17. 31. WHAT IS FALSE WITNESS? Every report about your neighbor that cannot be legally proven is false witness. 32. HOW SHOULD A CHRISTIAN DEAL WITH ONE WHO IS INVOLVED IN EVIL? Matthew 18:15-17. We are always to deal with the individual himself and not secretly to speak ill of him to others. If the one in error is a Christian who will not correct the problem, take others also to confirm your conviction. Finally, if there is no repentance of a legally confirmed sin, let the individual be excommunicated. 1 Timothy 5:19 safeguards the elders against false witness. 33. WHAT IS THE TENTH COMMANDMENT? "Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor anything that is thy neighbor's." Exodus 20:17.
