God And His Word - A Question And Answer Approach To Understanding The Bible
34. WHAT DOES THIS MEAN? We should fear and love God that we not craftily seek to get our neighbor's inheritance or house. We should not estrange, force or entice away from our neighbor his wife, servants or cattle, but urge them to stay and do their duty. Isaiah 5:8; Matthew 23:14; 1 Timothy 6:8-10. Note how Ahab coveted Naboth's vineyard, 1 Kings 21:1-16; David coveted the wife of Uriah, 2 Samuel 11:2-4; Absolom estranged the hearts of the people from David, 2 Samuel 15:1-6. 35. WHAT DOES GOD REQUIRE OF US IN THE TENTH COMMANDMENT? God requires that our hearts be filled with holy desires toward our neighbor. 36. HOLY DESIRES WILL MOTIVATE US IN WHAT WAYS? Such holy desires will move us to urge our neighbor's wife and servants to stay with him and to do their duty. It will move us to help our neighbor and be of service to him in keeping his inheritance or house. "By love serve one another." Galatians 5:13. 37. WHAT DOES GOD PARTICULARLY IMPRESS UPON US IN THE LAST COMMANDMENT? God impresses upon us: A. That in His sight evil desire, or lust, is indeed sin and deserves condemnation. Romans 7:7; James 1:14, 15. B. That we should not have any evil lust whatever in our hearts, but only holy desires and love of God and of all that is good. Leviticus 19:2; Matthew 5:48; Psalms 37:4.
