12. HOW DID JESUS TEACH US TO FULFILL THE SIXTH COMMANDMENT? Matthew 5:21-26. Jesus here teaches that we not only fulfill the Sixth Commandment by NOT committing physical violence, BUT ALSO by not allowing anger and murderous thoughts in our hearts. In other words, the New Covenant of Jesus stops the external sin by going to the very root of the problem in the heart and destroying it. 13. WHAT IS THE SEVENTH COMMANDMENT? "Thou shalt not commit adultery." Exodus 20:14. 14. WHAT DOES THIS MEAN? We should love and fear God such a way that we live a chaste and decent married life in word and deed, each one loving and honoring his spouse. 15. WHAT IS MARRIAGE? Marriage was instituted by God to be a lifelong union between one man and one woman unto one flesh. Marriage should follow rightful betrothal or engagement. "They are no more twain, but one flesh, what therefore God hath joined together let not man put asunder." Matthew 19:6. 16. WHAT DOES GOD FORBID IN THE SEVENTH COMMANDMENT? A. God forbids the breaking of the marriage vow by unfaithfulness or desertion. He permits the innocent party to procure a divorce when the other party is guilty of fornication. Matthew 19:6, 9; Hebrews 13:4; David's adultery, 2 Samuel 11; Herod, Mark 6: 18. B. God also forbids all unchaste and unclean thoughts, desires, words and deeds. Matthew 15:19; 5:28; Ephesians 5:3, 4, 12; Potiphar's wife, Genesis 39:7-12; Samson, Judges 16:1. 17. WHAT IS GOD'S BASIC THOUGHT IN THE SEVENTH COMMANDMENT? God forbids His people to misuse sex. The institution of marriage - Genesis 2:18-24; The Angel calls Mary, who was engaged to Joseph, Joseph's wife and calls Joseph her husband - Matthew 1:19, 20, 24.
