D. To love an esteem our parents and superiors as precious gifts of God. 7. WHY DOES GOD ADD THE PROMISE “THAT IT MAY BE WELL WITH THEE AND THOU MAYEST LIVE LONG ON THE EARTH”? By this promise God impresses upon us the importance and benefit of honoring our parents and superiors and urges us to obey this commandment willingly. 8. HOW IS THE FIFTH COMMANDMENT FULFILLED BY CHRISTIANS? A. As regarding the family: "Children, obey your parents IN THE LORD" (Ephesians 6:1) indicates that our obedience is to transcend that of the Old Law, for we are to be "in the Lord" - that is, in the very life of Jesus so that we truly love and obey from the heart. 1 Timothy 5 gives some excellent advice about consideration to be shown widows and parents. B. As regarding the Church: "Rebuke not an elder, but entreat him as a father…let the elders that rule well be counted worthy of double honor…against an elder receive not an accusation…" 1 Timothy 5:1, 17, 19. C. As regarding job superiors: "Do them service" - is the theme of 1 Timothy 6:1-3. 9. WHAT IS THE SIXTH COMMANDMENT? "Thou shalt not kill." Exodus 20:13. 10. WHAT DOES GOD FORBID IN THE SIXTH COMMANDMENT? A. God forbids us to take the life of a fellow man (murder) or our own life (suicide). Genesis 9:6; Matthew 26:52; Romans 13:4. B. God forbids us to hurt or harm our neighbor in his body, that is, to do or say anything which may destroy, shorten or embitter his life. Romans 12:19. C. God forbids us to bear anger and hatred in our hearts against our neighbor. Matthew 5:22; 15:19; 1 John 3:15; Ephesians 4:26. 11. WHAT DOES GOD REQUIRE OF US IN THE SIXTH COMMANDMENT? A. We should help and befriend our neighbor in every bodily need. Romans 12:20; Abraham, Genesis 14:12-16; David, 1 Samuel 26:1-12; The Good Samaritan, Luke 10:33-35. B. We should be merciful, kind and forgiving towards our neighbor. Matthew 5:5, 7, 9; 5:25; 6:15; Ephesians 4:32.
