God And His Word - A Question And Answer Approach To Understanding The Bible

LESSON 7: THE MOSAIC COVENANT- THE SECOND TABLE OF THE LAW 1. WHAT IS THE SUMMARY OF THE SECOND TABLE OF THE LAW? "Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself." Matthew 22:39. 2. WHO IS OUR NEIGHBOR? Our neighbor is every one of our fellow men. Jesus' classic answer to this question is found in Luke 10:29-37; there Jesus indicates that "showing compassion to the undeserving" is the way to be a good neighbor. Also Galatians 6:10; Matthew 5:44; 7:12. 3. WHAT IS THE FIFTH COMMANDMENT? "Honor thy Father and thy Mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the Lord God giveth thee." Exodus 20:12. 4. WHAT DOES THIS MEAN? We should recognize the authority that God has allowed our parents and masters to have. Our fear and love of God should be such that we automatically give honor, service and obedience to our leaders, and hold them in love and esteem. 5. WHAT DOES GOD FORBID IN THE FIFTH COMMANDMENT? God forbids us to despise our parents and other superiors by disregarding their dignity or provoking them to just anger by disobedience or any other kind of wickedness. Proverbs 30:17; Romans 13:2. Note sons of Eli, 1 Samuel 2:12, 23, 25; Absolom's rebellion, 2 Samuel 15. 6. WHAT DOES GOD REQUIRE OF US IN THE FIFTH COMMANDMENT? God requires us: A. To honor our parents and other superiors, that is, to regard them as God’s representatives. Ephesians 6:2, 3; Leviticus 19:32; Joseph, Genesis 46:29; Solomon, 1 Kings 2:19; Elisha, 2 Kings 2:12. B. To serve our parents and other superiors by gladly doing for them what we can. 1 Timothy 5:4. Joseph, Genesis 47:11; Jesus, John 19:26. C. To obey our parents and other superiors in all things in which God has placed them over us. Colossians 3:20; Proverbs 23:22; 1 Peter 2:18; Acts 5:29; Jesus, Luke 2:51; Jonathan, 1 Samuel 20:31-33.
