Wheeler Robinson comments: "The cardinal fact of the prophetic consciousness, as it is displayed in Amos and his great successors, is the absolute conviction of a divine call, mis sion, and message." The more modern expression (as in the NLT), "The Lord gave these messages to-," is understandable but lacks the dynamic, forceful simplicity of God's original intent in the Hebrew. 4. Such an experience was no everyday occurrence! In contrast the New Testament Christian has the Holy Spirit abiding constantly within, giving impressions and assurances and sometimes speaking a clearly defined word. This is one of the main differences between prophecy in the Old and New Testaments, as we will see in chapter 9. God oversaw the accuracy of the logos word of the Old Testament, whereas the Church oversees the accuracy of the rhema word for current events in the New Testament. 5. This terminology internal and external is used by A. A. MacRae in his article "Prophets and Prophecy," p. 880. 6. Lit. Heb., "the cave" (1 Kings 19:9). The Hebrew has the definite article, which some scholars feel indicates a special, well-known cave-perhaps the cleft of the rock where Moses met with God (Exodus 33:22; 34:6)? 7. These forms of hearing from God are explained by Jack Deere, Surprised by the Voice of God, chapters 9 and 10. 8.Wagner has given some insight on this. Praying with Power, chapter 2, "Two-Way Prayer: Hearing God," gives good illustrations and a positive testimony for this approach. 391 • Chapter 5: Mind: How Did Prophecy Come to a Prophet?

Howells says: "The central place given to the Prophets in the Massoretic [sic] text can be supported by the fact that in one sense the whole of the OId Testament is a prophetic book and the phrase: 'saith the Lord' is cited some 3,500 times in its pages. The impact made by the prophets on the history of Israel cannot be over-estimated. . . ." There is nothing to substantiate the existence of a school as we know it. 20.Patrick Fairbairn, Prophecy (Grand Rapids: Baker, 1976 reprint from the edition issued in 1865 by T. & T.
