Your Sons & Daughters Shall Prophesy - Prophetic Gifts Today In The New Testament Church
The Latter Rain Movement
yet stayed well within the Scripture which states that prophecy is for edifi cation, exhortation and comfort.Except during the time when hands were being laid upon ones for the Gifts of the Spirit, we saw no evidence of the office of a prophet in operation. The prophecies were simply the Gift of Prophecy in operation. 20 Unfortunately the simplicity and reality of those first meetings were not always maintained as the message, prophetic activity and excitement were carried around the world. The most difficult aspect of maintaining a pure prophetic flow, as with most prophetic movements, is the willingness and ability to submit to evaluation. A challenging statement on the lack of test ing in the LRM is given by Pastor Dick Iverson of Portland, Oregon: The Latter Rain movement, in my estimation, was destroyed by an unbri dled prophetic utterance.Men and women were going around prophesy ing all kinds of words over people and they were not being judged. They were not under any authority and there was no respect for the local resi dent ministry. They had a word from God and no man was going to tell them they were not going to be able to minister it.Church after church was ruined and Latter Rain became a reproach and stench across the nation. When something like this happens, the tendency is to "throw the baby out with the bath water." ...I believe at this time that there are those who are so caught up with the prophetic spirit and emphasis that they are ignoring some dangerous lessons we've learned in history.Starting "prophetic churches " is very dan gerous. That implies that the church is going to be guided by the prophetic. I don't believe that is God's plan.I believe the church is guided by the word of God and God has given ministries to that church. The prophetic was only to confirm the mind and will of God, not to govern or control churches or pastors. 21 4. Money and prophetic activity are not compatible. Whenever prophets require money for their services, especially for "the-bigger-the offering-the-better-the-prophecy" ministry, the Church must say no. Prophecy is the voice of God and cannot be bought. As Peter told Simon, "May your silver perish with you, because you thought you could obtain the gift of God with money!" (Acts 8:20). A challenging prophecy came at Emmanuel Gospel Temple in Los Ange les in 1948: "There will be many that will come and want to be involved and flow along with what I am doing, but they are not of me and I have not drawn them, and you will know them by their love of money." 22 5. A sectarian spirit arises when any group feels it is the sole custo dian of God's revelation. The LRM began, as many revivals do, with the wonderful realization that God loves all His people and that there should 297.
