HISTORY ABOUNDS with various revivalist or renewal movements seeking to return to the apostolic root system of the early Church. Three relatively recent movements stand out as interesting case studies for the subject of prophecy. More contemporary evangelical or charis matic groups could have been used as examples, but with these three suf ficient time has passed to allow historical insights to develop: • Edward Irving and the Catholic Apostolic Church (A.D. 1830) • The Apostolic Church of Great Britain (A.D. 1916) • The Latter Rain Movement (A.D. 1948) Each of these evangelical groups was thoroughly devoted to Christ and the Bible and characterized by the ministry of prophecy in the local church, a belief in glossolalia and a belief in contemporary apostles and prophets. 267.
