AT CORINTH

. . . So that you are not lacking in any gift [the first occurrence in 1 Corinthians of charisma], awaiting eagerly the revelation of our Lord Jesus Christ. 1 Corinthians 1:7

THE CORINTHIAN CHURCH has been much maligned by critics, and the happenings of the worship services there, specifically tongues and prophecy, written off to lack of spirituality or fanaticism. Actually, considering the heathen society of the time, it is amazing that the church did as well as it did! It may someday be seen that the Corinthian church, which demonstrated so much spiritual activity in such a depraved envi ronment, was actually one of the heartiest in the Mediterranean world, and more spiritual than given credit for. The city of Corinth, which Paul first visited during his second mis sionary journey, was strategically situated on a narrow isthmus sand wiched between the Aegean and Adriatic Seas. This land bridge connected the Peloponnesus (the strange, handlikesouthern tip of Greece) with north ern Greece.
