A WONDERFUL PART of initiation into the early Church was the experience of the Holy Spirit. The new convert found an awesome awareness of the Spirit of God in gatherings of fellow believers. These encounters with God stood in stark contrast to the dead, useless, tedious ritual of pagan temples. Heathenism gave way to deep despair and dis satisfaction, the desecration of human dignity and sexuality, and futility for women and slaves. But those ordeals were gratefully exchanged for the new, blessed life of joy and hope in serving Christ, even when out ward circumstances could not change. New converts discovered joyfully that Christians were prophetic peo ple in the sense that they shared the same infilling and awareness of the Spirit of Jesus.
