COMPARING
PROPHECY IN BOTH
TESTAMENTS
"I am a fellow servant of yours and of your brethren the prophets...." Revelation 22:9
THE TERM PROPHET is used by both ancient Hebrews and the early Church, and the Christians did not seem to struggle with a dif ference in meaning. They saw continuity between the Hebrew prophets and the New Testament prophets. The Septuagint, the popular Greek edition of the Old Testament used by many Jews of the time, translated the Hebrew nabi into the Greek prophetes consistently throughout the Old Testament. The New Testament writers continued the use of the same word, without any abrupt redefini tion or explanation, in their discussions of local Christian churches. 1 Some important variations did exist in the use of prophecy between the two Testaments, as we will see in this chapter, but the essence of prophecy has not changed. God spoke in biblical history to reveal His will and He still speaks today. The prophets of both Testaments were spokesmen and messengers of God to His people. Because the historical settings were different, we find 143.
