1 Jude, the servant of Jesus Christ, and 1 brother of 2 James, to them that are sanctified by God the Father, and 3 preserved in Jesus Christ, and called: 2 Mercy unto you, and peace, and love, be multiplied. 3 Beloved, when I gave all diligence to write unto you of the common salvation, it was needful for me to write unto you, and exhort you that ye should earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints. 4 4 For there are certain men crept in unawares, who were before of old ordained to this condemnation, ungodly men, turning the grace of our God into 5 lasciviousness, and denying the only 6 Lord God, and our Lord Jesus Christ. Six examples of apostsy in the past:

6 And the angels which kept not their first estate, but left their own 9 habitation, he hath reserved in everlasting chains under darkness 10 unto the judgment of the great day. P 3. Sodom - God judges the world 7 Even as 11 Sodom and Gomorrha, and the cities about them in like manner, giving themselves over to fornication, and going after 12 strange flesh, are set forth for an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire. 8 13 Likewise also these filthy dreamers defile the flesh, despise dominion, and speak evil of 14 dignities.

13. II Pet 2:10 14. or, “angels”

1:2 If we only comprehended howmuch God really loves us ( and love, be multiplied ), we’d be in tears. We can keep from experienc- ing God’s love, but we cannot keep Him from loving us. We can’t keep the sun from shining, but we can put an umbrella up to keep the sun from shining on us. Sadly, there are a number of umbrellas we can open in this life that can keep the love of the Son from shining on us. Failing to confess sin or forgive sin or to do His will instead of ours are just a few of those umbrellas. 1:3a Jude’s initial desire was to write about some facet of our salvation ( Rom 13:11 ), but the Spirit detoured him and led him to warn us about the impending apostasy, especially in the last days before the return of Christ. 1:3b Christians are admonished to contend for the faith (the eternal, not the temporal - I Cor 6:1-8), not be contentious. As believers, we are exhorted to fight ( contend ) for two eternal truths: (1) Who God is (vs 1) - We must worship God in “spirit” ( Jn 4:23 ); and (2) How God saves (vs 3) - We must worship God in “truth” ( Jn 4:24 ). 1:6 “ The angels which kept not their first estate, but left their own habitation ” is a reference to the group of fallen angels, whom Satan, no doubt, persuaded to cohabit with mortal women and were imprisoned immediately because of the gross nature of that sin ( Gen 6:2 , Rev 9:1 b , Psa 9:17 and II Pet 2:4 ). 1:8 This term ( filthy dreamers ) is used to depict the evil men of Sodom and Gomorrah (vs 7). According to the Bible, sodomites despise authority (Gen 19:9 and I Tim 1:9-10). NOTE – There is a direct correlation between perversion and rebellion against moral disciplines and legal authorities. 2134
