3 For every high priest is ordained to offer gifts and sacrifices: wherefore it is of necessity that this man have somewhat also to offer. 4 For if he were on earth, he should not be a priest, seeing that there are priests that offer gifts according to the law: 5 Who serve unto the example and 1 shadow of heavenly things, as Moses was admonished of God when he was about to make the tabernacle: for, 2 See, saith he, that thou make all things according to the pattern shewed to thee in the mount. The New Covenant is better because it is based upon a better SACRIFICE 6 But now hath he obtained a more excellent ministry, by how much also he is the 3 mediator of a 4 better covenant, which was established upon better promises. 7 For if that 5 first covenant had been faultless, then should no place have been sought for the second. The promise of Israel’s restoration (Fulfilled - Rev 20:4) 8 For finding fault with them, HE saith, 6 Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, 7 when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah: P 9 6 Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day when I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt; because they continued not in my covenant, and I regarded them not, saith the Lord. 10 6 For this is the covenant that 7 I will make with the house of Israel after those days, saith the Lord; I will put my laws into their mind, and write them in their hearts: and I will be to them a God, and they shall be to me a people: P 11 6 And they shall not teach every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the Lord: 7 for all shall know me, from the least to the greatest. P 12 6 For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, 7 and their sins and their iniquities will I remember nomore. P
13 In that he saith, A new covenant, he hath made the first old. Now that which decayeth and waxeth old is ready to vanish away. Hebrews 9 CHRIST is superior to the OT laws and sacrifices Date Written - c. AD 61 1 Then verily the first covenant had also 8 ordinances of divine service, and a 9 worldly sanctuary. 2 For there was a tabernacle made; the first, wherein was the 10 candlestick, and the 11 table, and the shewbread; which is called the sanctuary. 3 12 And after the second veil, the tabernacle which is called the Holiest of all; 4 Which had the golden 13 censer, 14 and the ark of the covenant overlaid round about with gold, wherein was 15 the golden pot that had manna, 16 and Aaron’s rod that budded, 17 and the tables of the covenant; 5 18 And over it the cherubims of glory shadowing the 19 MERCYSEAT ; of which we cannot now speak particularly. 6 Now when these things were thus ordained, 20 the priests went always into the first tabernacle, accomplishing the service of God. 7 But into the second went the high priest alone 21 once every year, not without blood, 22 which he offered for himself, and for the errors of the people: 8 The Holy Ghost 23 this signifying, that the way into the holiest of all was not yet made manifest, while as the first taberna- cle was yet standing: 9 Which was a 24 figure for the time then present, in which were offered both gifts and sacrifices, 25 that could not make him that did the service perfect, as pertaining to the conscience; 10 Which stood only in meats and drinks, and 26 divers washings, and carnal ordinances, imposed on them until the time of 27 REFORMATION . CHRIST died “once” for all (Once saved - always saved) 11 But Christ being come an high priest of good things to come, by a greater and

8:6-7 The reason God gave the nation of Israel the first covenant (called the Old Covenant) was to show them their need for the second covenant (called the New Covenant or “ better covenant ” under CHRIST - Gal 3:24), which in reality was in existence before the first covenant. The second covenant was promised to Abraham 430 years “before” the first covenant ever existed (Gal 3:13-18). The New Covenant/ second Covenant (though 430 years older than the Old Covenant/first covenant), was instituted at Jesus’ death (Heb 9:16-17). Whereas the former covenant/Old Covenant (given to the nation of Israel) was external, engraved in stone (Exo 32:15-16), the “ better covenant ”/New Covenant ( Jere 31:31 ) is internal, written on the heart (II Cor 3:3).
