4 And patience, experience; and experi- ence, hope: 5 1 And hope maketh not ashamed; be- cause the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts 2 by the Holy Ghost which is 3 given unto us. 6 For when we were yet 4 without strength, in due time 5 Christ died for the ungodly. 7 For scarcely for a righteous man will one die: yet peradventure for a good man some would even dare to die. CHRIST’S blood - The only payment for sin and its penalty (death and hell) 8 But God 6 commendeth his love to- ward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, 5 Christ died for us. 9 Much more then, being now justi- fied by 7 his blood, we shall be saved from 8 WRATH through 9 him. PP 10 For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life. 11 And not only so, but we also joy in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom we have now received the atonement. 12 Wherefore, as by one 10 man sin en-
tered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that 11 all have sinned: 13 (For until the 12 law sin was in the world: but sin is not imputed when there is no law. 14 Nevertheless death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over them that had not sinned after the similitude of Adam’s transgression, who is the 13 figure of 14 HIM that was to come. 15 But not as the offence, so also is the free gift. For if through the offence of 15 one many be dead, much more the grace of God, and the gift by grace, 16 which is by one man, Jesus Christ, hath abounded unto 17 many. 16 And not as it was by one that sinned, so is the gift: for the judgment was by one to condemnation, but the free gift is of many offences unto justification. 17 For if by 18 one man’s offence death reigned by one; much more they which receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness 19 shall reign in life by one, Jesus Christ.) P 18 Therefore as by the offence of 18 one

5:8 Max Lucado in Let the Journey Begin (under ‘What a God!’) notes:
Ponder the achievement of God. He doesn’t condone our sin, nor does he compromise his standard. He doesn’t ignore our rebellion, nor does he relax his demands. Rather than dismiss our sin, he assumes our sin and, incredibly, sentences himself. 1
Sin did nothing but imprison us. Then came CHRIST and served our time ( while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us ) 5:9 Officially the day of “ WRATH ” will begin during the middle of the seven-year Tribulation Period (Rev 6:5) and end after Christ returns at His Second Coming (Rev 19:11-21). 5:10a If God didn’t love His enemies , there wouldn’t be Christians. 5:10b The fact that CHRIST has been raised from the dead and is alive guarantees us our salvation ( we shall be saved by his life – Rom 10:9 and Heb 7:25). 5:13 a Sin existed as a fact ( sin was in the world ) long before it existed as guilt ( sin is not imputed where there is no law ). The law did not make men sinners. The law made men transgressors, for “ by the law is the knowledge of sin ” (Rom 3:20). Men were life-sinners long before they were lawbreakers. This is proved by the fact that death reigned from Adam to Moses (vs 14) before the Law of Moses was ever written. 5:13 b Although the written Law of Moses to Israel did not exist for the first 2,513 years of man’s existence, there were still laws to be observed (called “the laws before the Law” - Job 22:22 & 23:12 ). Even before the Law of Moses was given (1487 BC), physical death attested to the presence of sin in Adam and his posterity and the fact that laws had been broken by man (Gen 2:16-17). Although God is a God of principle and will only judge us based on “ the iniquity that we know ” (I Sam 3:13) (the meaning behind “ sin is not imputed where there is no law ”), still, God holds every human being accountable for “the laws before the Law” that are written on our hearts (Rom 2:14-15 and Gen 26:5 ). . 5:14 Whereas Isaac prefigured the resurrected CHRIST (Heb 11:19), Adam “prefigured” the person of CHRIST ( who is the figure of HIM that was to come ). Adam is the only OT character to be called explicitly a type of Christ (I Cor 15:45-47). And although there are a number of differences between Adam and Christ (vs 15-19), there is only one possible similarity – both were sent in hope of salvaging a fallen world . Adam was sent to salvage the angelic world ( Gen 2:17 b ), and failed, so CHRIST was sent to save both worlds ( man’s world - Rom 5:12-19, and the angel’s world - ( Rev 12: 10- 12 ) and succeeded. 1 Lucado, Max.
