EXODUS 2:13

she had compassion on him, and said, This is one of the Hebrews’ children. 7 Then said his 7 sister to Pharaoh’s daughter, Shall I go and call to thee a nurse of the Hebrew women, that she may nurse the child for thee? 8 And Pharaoh’s daughter said to her, Go. And the maid went and called the child’s 8 mother. 9 And Pharaoh’s daughter said unto her, Take this child away, and nurse it for me, and I will give thee thy wages. And the woman took the child, and nursed it. 10 And the child grew, and she brought him unto Pharaoh’s daughter, and he be came her son. And she called his name 9 Moses: and she said, Because I drew him out of the water. Historical Note - Egyptian history continued c. 1570 BC with the New Kingdom Period in which Amenhotep I (c. 1570 - 1550 BC) ascended Egypt’s throne. For the next 15 years or so Amenhotep I raised Moses as his own. Then Amenhotep I died and Thutmose I (c. 1550 - 1533 BC) took control of Egypt. Thutmose I consolidated the power of the new empire, invaded Syria, subjugated it from the coast to Carchemish, put it under guard and tribute, and returned to Thebes laden with spoils and the glory that always comes from the killing of men. Moses lived under Thutmose I until he was approximately 35 years old. Then Thutmose I died and Thutmose II (c. 1533 - 1527 BC), Moses’ peer ascended the throne. It was during his reign that Moses decided to “ refuse to be called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter ” (Heb 11:24-26). Exodus 2 The birth of Moses Date - 1568 BC/AM 2432 1 And there went a 1 man of the house of Levi, and took to 2 wife a daughter of Levi. 2 And the woman conceived, and bare a son: and when she saw him that he was a 3 goodly child, she hid him three months. 3 And when she could not longer hide him, she took for him an ark of bulrushes, and daubed it with slime and with pitch, and put the child therein; and she laid it in the flags by the river’s brink. 4 And his 4 sister stood afar off, to wit what would be done to him. 5 And the 5 daughter of Pharaoh came down to wash herself at the river; and her maidens walked along by the river’s side; and when she saw the ark among the flags, she sent her maid to fetch it. 6 And when she had opened it, she saw the child: and, behold, the babe wept. 6 And

2:10 Moses’s name means, “to draw out.” He is referred to more often in the NT than any other OT character. Moses is referred to 101 times in the NT (Mt 5:21,27,33 & 8:4 & 17:3-4 & 19:7-8 & 22:24 & 23:2, Mk 1:44 & 7:10 & 9:4-5 & 10:3-5 & 12:19,26, Lk 2:22 & 5:14 & 9:30,33 & 16:29,31 & 20:28,37 & 24:27,44, Jn 1:17,45 & 3:14 & 5:45-46 & 6:32 & 7:19,22-23 & 8:5 & 9:28-29, Acts 3:22 & 6:11,14 & 7:20-40,44 & 13:39 & 15:1,5,21 & 21:21 & 26:22 & 28:23, Rom 5:14 & 9:15 & 10:5,19, I Cor 9:9 & 10:2, II Cor 3:7,13,15, II Tim 3:8, Heb 3:2,3,5,16 & 7:14 & 8:5 & 9:19 & 10:28 & 11:23-29 & 12:21, Jude 9 and Rev 15:3). 2:11a According to Acts 7:21-22, Moses, the adopted son of the princess, was immersed in Egyptian learning. In those days he attended the Temple of the Sun, the premier educational center of the ancient world, where he was trained in the study of science, astronomy, philosophy, law, music, medicine, history, military combat, sculpture, painting, and the arts. NOTE - God is not afraid for us to think. He is not afraid for us to compare what He thinks with what the world thinks, or else He would have not allowed Moses, who was raised by godly Hebrew parents until weaned, to go through the schools of Egypt. All God asks is that we “evaluate” what we think with what He says. He is confident that His Word can withstand the test ( Heb 11:26 ). 2:11b By the time Moses had become a young man ( was grown ) he possessed the ability to speak with ease and to sway the masses ( was mighty in words and deeds - Acts 7:22). Is it no wonder God became angry with Moses and refused to hear his excuses about not being able to speak well (Exo 4:10-14)? 2:12 According to Acts 7:23-25, Moses “killed” the Egyptian in order to prove to the Jews God’s calling upon his life. He was wrong. It’s not up to us who have been called to prove anything to anybody. Proof of our calling is up to the One who called us (Rom 11:29). In the case of Moses, although God had certainly called him, God wasn’t ready to use him for another forty plus years (Exo 3), thus we are admonished not to be impetuous about our calling. THE ADAGE IS TRUE: Just because God’s called you doesn’t mean He’s prepared you yet for that calling The birth of Nahshon Nahshon’s name means “oracle.” He is referred to 2 times in the NT (Mt 1:4 and Lk 3:32). Nahshon is the 37th generation from CHRIST (Exo 6:23, Num 1:7 and Ruth 4:20). According to Exodus 6:23, Nahshon was Aaron’s brother- in-law.
