EXODUS 3:1

21 And Moses was content to dwell with the man: and he gave Moses 7 Zipporah his daughter. 22 And she bare him a son, and he called his name 8 Gershom: for he said, I have been a stranger in a strange land. 23 And it came to pass in process of time, that the 9 king of Egypt died: and the chil- dren of Israel sighed by reason of the bond- age, 10 and they cried, 11 and their cry came up onto God by reason of the bondage. 24 And God heard their groaning, and God remembered his 12 covenant with Abraham, with Isaac, and with Jacob. 25 And God looked upon the children of Israel, and God had respect unto them. Historical Note - Egyptian history continued c. 1527 BC in which Egypt’s only queen ascended to the throne. Approximately a year after Moses fled to Midian, Thut- mose II died and his half sister and wife Queen Hatshep- sut (1527-1505 BC) took control of Egypt’s throne. She ruled for twenty-two years in wisdom and peace and proved herself a king in everything but gender. Then in 1505 B.C., she died and her stepson (Thutmose III - 1505-1475 BC), undoubtedly the greatest pharaoh Egypt would ever place upon its throne, ascended the throne. Thutmose III extended the Egyptian empire by personally leading seventeen different campaigns into Syria. Year after year he marched victorious through western Asia, subduing, taxing, and levying tribute. Not only did Thut- mose III conquer, but he organized; everywhere he left doughty garrisons and capable governors. Thutmose III was the first man in history to recognize the importance of sea power. He built a fleet so effectively that he kept the Near East in check. By the time Moses was eighty years old and ready to return to Egypt, Thutmose III had literally become the master of the Mediterranean world.

14 And he said, 1 Who made thee a prince and a judge over us? intendest thou to kill me, as thou killedst the Egyptian? And Moses feared, and said, Surely this thing is known. 15 Now when 2 Pharaoh heard this thing, he sought to slay Moses. 3 But Moses fled from the face of Pharaoh, and dwelt in the land of 4 Midian: and he sat down by a well.

Moses flees to Midian Map #44

16 Now the 5 priest of Midian had seven daughters: and they came and drew wa- ter, and filled the troughs to water their father’s flock. 17 And the shepherds came and drove them away: but Moses stood up and helped them, and watered their flock. 18 And when they came to 6 Reuel their father, he said, How is it that ye are come so soon to day? 19 And they said, An Egyptian delivered us out of the hand of the shepherds, and also drew water enough for us, and wa- tered the flock. 20 And he said unto his daughters, And where is he? why is it that ye have left the man? call him, that he may eat bread. The birth of Caleb - c. 1526 BC The death of Amram - c. 1513 BC The birth of Joshua - c. 1506 BC Exodus 3 CHRIST appears to Moses (80 yrs old) (See - Jn 8:58) Date - 1488 BC/AM 2512 1 Now Moses kept the flock of Jethro his Historical Note after Exodus 2:25 According to “Merneptah’s Israel Tablet” ( Historical Note after Judges 5:31 ) Thutmose III appears to be the pharaoh of the Exodus, not Rameses II. Dr. Harry Rimmer in Dead Men Tell Tales notes: The tendency of our present day is to concede that the Pharaoh Thotmes, whose name is more commonly given as Thutmosis, was the pharaoh of the Oppression. There is a great deal of reliable authority for adopting this view. This mighty sovereign, whose history we have partly covered in connection with his sister, wife and domineering queen, Hatshepsut,intheportiondealingwiththetimesofMoses,accordingtothebestchronologist,reignedfifty-oneyears. 1 Thutmose III ruled Egypt for fifty-one years. Twenty-one years as co-regent with his step-mother (Queen Hatshepsut – 1527- 1505), and thirty years alone (from 1505-1475) (See Historical Note after Judges 5:31 ). The birth of Joshua Joshua’s name means “ Jehovah saves.” He is referred to 2 times in the NT (Acts 7:45 and Heb 4:8). Joshua’s

name and JESUS’ name mean the same thing – “ Jehovah saves” ( Acts 7:45 ). 1 Rimmer, Harry. Dead Men Tell Tales , Grand Rapids, MI: Eerdmans Pub. Co. 1939. Print.
