from us, must one be ordained to be a wit- ness with us of his resurrection. 23 And they appointed two, Joseph called 1 Barsabas, who was surnamed Jus- tus, and Matthias. 24 And they prayed, and said,Thou, Lord, which 2 knowest the hearts of all men, shew whether of these two thou hast chosen, 25 That he may take part of this minis- try and apostleship, from which Judas by transgression fell, that he might go to his own place. 26 And they gave forth their lots; and the 3 lot fell upon Matthias; and he was num- bered with the eleven apostles. Acts 2 The Day of Pentecost (Peter’s first sermon) Date - Sun, June 7th, AD 32 1 And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with 4 one accord in one place. 2 And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. 3 And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. The first sign gift to the Jews (The Apostles speak in tongues [foreign languages] in Jerusalem - Mk 16:17) 4 5 And they were all filled with the 6 HOLY GHOST , and began to speak with

7 other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. PF PF 5 And there were dwelling at Jerusalem 8 Jews, devout men, out of every nation under heaven. 6 Now when this was noised abroad, the multitude came together, and were con- founded, because that every man heard them speak in his own 9 language. 7 And they were all amazed and mar- velled, saying one to another, Behold, are not all these which speak 10 Galilaeans? 8 And how hear we every man in our own 9 tongue, wherein we were born? 9 Parthians, and Medes, and Elamites, and the dwellers in Mesopotamia, and in Judaea, and Cappadocia, in Pontus, and Asia, 10 Phrygia, and Pamphylia, in Egypt, and in the parts of Libya about Cyrene, and strangers of Rome, Jews and 11 proselytes, 11 Cretes and Arabians, we do hear them speak in our 9 tongues the wonderful works of God. 12 And they were all amazed, and were in doubt, saying one to another, What meaneth this? 13 Others mocking said, These men are full of new wine. 14 But Peter, standing up with the eleven, lifted up his voice, and said unto them, Ye men of Judaea, and all ye that dwell at Jeru- salem, be this known unto you, and hear- ken to my words:

1:25 God did not send Judas to Hell; Judas sent himself. The Bible says he went to “ his own place .” Man is the one who chooses his own destiny, not God. If you go to Hell it will be because you go and not because you are sent. Hell wasn’t even created for man ( Mt 25:41b ). It is your own fault if you are lost, for it is not God’s plan, nor is it His will that any should perish ( Gen 4:7 and II Pet 3:9 ). The Scriptures are plain–“ Ye will not come to me, that ye might have life ” (Jn 5:40). NOTE – Man has one of two choices. He voluntarily places himself under “good” or “evil” ( Gen 2:17b ). 2:1 This word ( Pentecost ) is the Greek word for the “Feast of Weeks” ( Harvest - Lev 23:15-22). It means “ fiftieth ” and occurred fifty days after the Feast of Firstfruits. Victor Buksbazen in The Gospel in The Feasts of Israel notes: In time, when the Jews became dispersed among the nations, Pentecost lost its primary character as a harvest festival, and became known as “The Feast of the Giving of the Law.” Ancient Rabbis by careful calculation and time reckoning came to the conclusion that God gave the law to Moses on the Day of Pentecost. Hence Pentecost is also known as “The Season of the Giving of the Law,” and is a time of rejoicing among the Jews. 1 Being the anniversary of the giving of the Law on Mount Sinai, Pentecost is considered to be the birthday of Judaism . Pentecost is also considered to be the birthday of the Jewish/Gentile Church ( Lev 23:17 a,b,c ). W.H. Griffith Thomas in How We Got Our Bible notes: The Church came into existence on the day of Pentecost by accepting divine revelation. 2 Thus, Pentecost is the birthday of two movements, one Jewish ( Judaism ) and one Jewish/Gentile (the Church), and is the meaning behind the two wave-loaves baked with leaven; for the Church of which both Jew and Gentile are members (I Cor 12:12-13) is not without sin. It contains leaven, the symbol of sin, reminding us to look for perfection not in the Church, but in Christ, in whom there is no leaven of sin (II Cor 5:21, Heb 4:15 & 9:14, I Pet 1:18-19 & 2:21-22, I Jn 3:5, Isa 53:9 and Deut 32:4). NOTE -There are three lessons associated with the Church that we can learn from the Feast of Pentecost : 1. Pentecost occurred on Sunday and celebrated the birth of the NT Church (Lev 23:15-16 and Mt 16:18 d ) 2. Pentecost occurred in order to unify the only two nationalities (Jew and Gentile - two wave loaves) God ever created (Lev 23:17 and Eph 3:1-6) –Jews and Gentiles (the Jewish/Gentile Church).
