5 1 For John truly baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the 2 HOLY GHOST not many days hence . P 6 When they therefore were come to- gether, they asked of him, saying, Lord, 3 wilt thou at this time restore again the 4 kingdom to Israel? 7 And he said unto them, 5 It is not for you to know the times or the seasons, which the Father hath put in his own power . 8 But ye shall receive 6 power, after that the 2 HOLY GHOST is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth . P The ascension of CHRIST (S/A - Lk 24:50-53 & Mk 16:19,20) Date - Fri, May 28, AD 32 9 And when he had spoken these things, while they beheld, 7 HE was taken up; and a cloud received him out of their sight. The apostles choose Matthias to replace Judas 15 And in those days Peter stood up in the midst of the disciples, and said, (the number of names together were about an hundred and twenty,) 16 Men and brethren, this scripture must needs have been fulfilled, which the 13 HOLY GHOST by the mouth of David spake before 14 concerning Judas, 15 which was guide to them that took Jesus. 17 For he was numbered with us, and had obtained part of this ministry. 18 16 Now this man purchased a field with the 17 reward of iniquity; and falling head- long, 18 he burst asunder in the midst, and all his bowels gushed out. 19 And it was known unto all the dwell- ers at Jerusalem; insomuch as that field is called in their proper 19 tongue, Aceldama, that is to say, The field of blood. 20 For it is 20 written in the book of Psalms, Let his habitation be desolate, and let no man dwell therein: and his 22 bishop- rick let another take. 1:5 “ For John truly baptizedwith water, but …” But what? “… but ye shall be baptizedwith the HolyGhost not many days hence .” According to Jesus, there is a “greater” baptism (referred to here as the “baptism of the Holy Ghost” for the purpose of witnessing - vs 8) than water baptism. Those who believe in baptismal regeneration ( Eph 5:19 and Heb 6:1 ) and teach that water baptism is a part of the salvation process fail to recognize the implication of this verse. If water baptism is that important, why is it deemphasized here? The reason Jesus deemphasized water baptism is because the rite of water baptism pales in comparison to winning people to Jesus. Which means: Water baptism has nothing to do with winning people to Jesus (salvation). It is not a part of the saving Gospel ( I Cor 1:17 , Jn 3:5 and Mk 16:16 ). In fact, the “baptism of the HOLY SPIRIT ” can even be received before the rite of water baptism (Acts 10:44-48). What Jesus was emphasizing here was that Christians needed to be as fully plunged (immersed, baptized) in the power of the HOLY SPIRIT for the purpose of witnessing, as their bodies were when they were immersed in the waters of baptism. 1:8 The word ( witnesses ) comes from the Greek word PDUτX9 ( martus ), from which we derive our English word “martyr.” The word means, “ one who bears witness by his death .” THE ADAGE IS TRUE: A Christian who isn’t different enough to die for what he believes isn’t different enough to make a difference NOTE – A good read about Christian martyrdom is dc Talk’s book called Jesus Freaks . 1 1:20 Sadly, there are some who believe that Judas was “predestined” to deny our Lord, betraying Him, and thus was born to go to Hell. However, Judas was not predestined to betray Jesus and to go to Hell; he was “predicted” ( For it is written ) to betray Jesus (Psa 69:25 and 109:8) because he chose to reject Him as Savior. Judas was not born to go to Hell. He chose to go there when he rejected the truth about Jesus ( Acts 1:25 ). 1 Talk, DC. Jesus Freaks , Tulsa, OK: Albury Pub. 1999. Print.
