LUKE 22:26

LUKE 22:53

1695

26 But ye shall not be so: but he that is greatest among you, let him be as the younger; and he that is chief, as he that doth serve. 27 For whether is greater, he that sitteth at meat, or he that serveth? is not he that sitteth at meat? but I am among you as he that 1 serveth. 28 Ye are they which have continued with me 2 in my temptations. PF 29 And I appoint unto you a kingdom, 3 as my Father hath appointed unto me; P 30 3 That ye may eat and drink at my table in my KINGDOM , 4 and sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel . P P CHRIST foretells of Peter’s denial (S/A - Mt 26:31-35 & Mk 14:27-31 & Jn 13:31-38) Date - Thurs, Apr 16, AD 32 31 And the Lord said, Simon, Simon, behold, Satan 5 hath desired to have 6 you, that he may sift you as wheat: 32 7 But I have prayed for thee, that thy faith fail not: and when thou art converted, strengthen thy brethren . 33 And he said unto him, Lord, I am ready to go with thee, both into prison, 8 and to death. 34 And he said, I tell thee, Peter, the cock shall not crow this day, 9 before that thou shalt thrice deny that thou knowest me. P 35 And he said unto them, 10 When I sent you without purse, and scrip, and shoes, lacked ye any thing ? And they said, Nothing. 36 Then said he unto them, But now, he that hath a purse, let him take it, and likewise his scrip: and he that hath no sword, let him sell his garment, and buy one. 37 For I say unto you, that this that is written must yet be accomplished in me, 11 And 12 HE was reckoned among the transgressors: for the things concerningme have an end . P 38 And they said, Lord, behold, here are two swords. And he said unto them, It is enough .

39 And he came out, and went, as he was 13 wont, to the mount of Olives; and his disciples also followed him. 40 And when he was at the place, he said unto them, 14 Pray that ye enter not into temptation . 41 And he was withdrawn from them about a stone’s cast, and kneeled down, and prayed, 42 Saying, Father, if thou be willing, 15 remove this cup from me: nevertheless 16 not my will, but thine, be done . PF 43 And there appeared an angel unto him from heaven, strengthening him. 44 And being in an agony he prayed more earnestly: and his sweat was as it were great drops of blood falling down to the ground. 45 And when he rose up from prayer, and was come to his disciples, he found them sleeping for sorrow, 46 And said unto them, Why sleep ye? rise and pray, lest ye enter into 17 temptation . The betrayal and arrest of CHRIST (S/A - Mt 26:47-56 & Mk 14:43-52 & Jn 18:2-11) 47 And while he yet spake, behold a multitude, and he that was called Judas, one of the twelve, went before them, and drew near unto 18 Jesus to kiss him. PF 48 But Jesus said unto him, Judas, 18 betrayest thou the SON OF MAN with a kiss ? PF 49 When they which were about him saw what would follow, they said unto him, Lord, shall we smite with the sword? 50 And 19 one of them smote the servant of the high priest, and cut off his right ear. 51 And Jesus answered and said, Suffer ye thus far . And he touched his ear, and healed him. 52 Then Jesus said unto the chief priests, and captains of the temple, and the elders, which were come to him, Be ye come out, as against a thief, with swords and staves ? 53 When I was daily with you in the temple, ye stretched forth no hands against me: but this is your hour, and the power of darkness .

Thus, Jesus was speaking to all of us here, not just Peter (I Pet 5:8). 7. Heb 7:25 8. Note - Jesus didn’t ask us to die with Him; He asked us to live for Him. Don’t let your pride keep you from living for Him (I Cor 10:12). 9. Fulfilled - Lk 22:57-58,60 (Peter’s Denial of Christ) 10. Lk 9:1-3 & 10:1-4 11. Quoted in the OT - Isa 53:12 (See - Mk 15:28) 12. 22:36 Jesus pointed out to His disciples that they had never lacked anything while they were with Him. But now that He was about to be taken away from them, they would need to make preparations for themselves and their ministries. They would need to prepare: (1) financially ( purse ) ; (2) wisely ( scrip ) ; and (3) physically ; personal protection ( sword ). 22:38 What Jesus probably meant here when He said “ It is enough ” is that two swords would be more than adequate for the twelve of them. Personal protection doesn’t mean owning an arsenal. John Macarthur in Found: God’s Will notes: The Christian is not a revolutionary. If there is a lawful way to make a needed change, the Christian takes that route. 1 1 Macarthur, John. Found: God’s Will, Colorado Springs, CO: David C. Cook. 1973, 2012. Print.
