PF Historical Note - Roman history continued c. AD 14 with the New Kingdom Period in which Gaius Octavius (Augustus Caesar) died and his stepson Tiberius (AD 14-37) assumed Rome’s throne. Tiberius was born in c. 42 BC, the son of the Empress Livia, wife of Augustus, by her first husband (Tiberius Claudius Nero). Tiberius is remembered as being a capable and fair Roman emperor, but he remained very unpopular. Tiberius died on March 16, AD 37. He was the reigning emperor at the time of Christ’s death and resurrection. Luke 3 The ministry of John the Baptist (S/A - Mt 3:1-12 & Mk 1:1-8) Date - AD 28 1 Now in the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, Pontius Pilate being governor of Judaea, and Herod being tetrarch of Galilee, and his brother Philip tetrarch of Ituraea and of the region of Trachonitis, and Lysanias the tetrarch of Abilene, 2 Annas and Caiaphas being the high priests, the word of God came unto John the son of Zacharias in the wilderness. 3 And 4 he came into all the country about Jordan, 5 preaching the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins; PF 4 As it is written in the book of the words of Esaias the prophet, saying, 6 The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the 7 LORD , make his paths straight. 5 6 Every valley shall be filled, and every mountain and hill shall be brought low; and the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough ways shall be made smooth; 6 6 And all flesh shall 8 see the 9 SALVATIONOF G O D . 43 And when they had fulfilled the days, as they returned, the child Jesus tarried behind in Jerusalem; and Joseph and his mother knew not of it. 44 But they, supposing him to have been in the company, went a day’s journey; and they sought him among their kinsfolk and acquaintance. 45 And when they found him not, they turned back again to Jerusalem, seeking him. 46 And it came to pass, that after three days they found him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the doctors, both hearing them, and asking them questions. 47 Andall that heardhimwere astonished at his understanding and answers. 48 And when they saw him, they were amazed: and his mother said unto him, Son, why hast thou thus dealt with us? behold, thy father and I have sought thee sorrowing. 49 And he said unto them, How is it that ye sought me? wist ye not that I must be about my Father’s 1 business ? 50 And they understood not the saying which he spake unto them. 2:46 We pretty much know the questions Jesus might have asked these theologians ( doctors ). Questions like: * Why do you think the Scriptures were written? (Jn 5:39) * When the promised MESSIAH comes, who will He be? (Mt 16:13-16) * What do you think the promised MESSIAH will look like? (Isa 53:2) * Where do you think the promised MESSIAH will come from? Heaven? Among the people? (Jn 3:13 & 8:14-24)
