36 Then cometh Jesus with them unto a place called Gethsemane, and saith unto the disciples, Sit ye here, while I go and pray yonder . 37 And he took with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, and began to be sorrowful and very heavy. 38 Then saith he unto them, My soul is exceeding sorrowful, even unto death: tarry ye here, and watch with me . 39 And he went a little farther, and fell on his face, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if it be possible, 12 let this cup pass fromme: nevertheless not as 13 I will, but as thou wilt . PF 40 And he cometh unto the disciples, and findeth them asleep, and saith unto Peter, What, could ye not watch with me one hour ? 41 Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the 14 SPIRIT indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak . 42 He went away again the second time, and prayed, saying, Omy Father, if this cup may not pass away from me, except I drink it, thy will be done . 43 And he came and found them asleep again: for their eyes were heavy. 44 And he left them, and went away again, and prayed the third time, saying the same words. 45 Then cometh he to his disciples, and saith unto them, Sleep on now, and take your rest: behold, the hour is at hand, and the Son of man is betrayed into the hands of sinners . 46 Rise, let us be going: behold, he is at hand that doth betray me . The betrayal and arrest of CHRIST (S/A - Mk 14:43-52 & Lk 22:47-53 & Jn 18:2-11) 47 Andwhile he yet spake, lo, 15 Judas, one
26:30 Traditionally, families sang “hymns” and/or psalms on the night of the Passover. Psalms 113 and 114 would have been sung at the beginning of the meal (Mt 26:26) and Psalms 115-118 would have been sung here at the close of the meal (vs 30). 26:35 Be careful how devoted you become to spreading the message of Christianity to a lost and dying world… for the day you make that decision ( Though I should die with thee, yet will I not deny thee ) till the day you leave this earth you’re going to face untold persecution from without (Jn 15:18-20 and Mt 10:16a ) and from within (Mt 10:34-36). 26:38 Jesus knew that He was going to die (vs. 2). According to Hebrews 12:2, He even looked forward to it. The reason Jesus began to be sorrowful and deeply depressed “… even unto death ” is because He feared that He was about to face an untimely death by the hand of Satan (Jn 13:26-27). Jesus prayed to keep from dying at the wrong time, in the wrong place, and in the wrong way, and Hebrews 5:7 says He was heard. 26:39 The drink here is called the “ cup . ” It is used figuratively in Scripture to describe God’s blessing (Psa 23:5) or His wrath (Psa 75:8). Here the cup refers to the divine wrath that Jesus would bear on the cross, as He became man’s sin-bearer. Jesus was not saying here that he wished to avoid the cross. That would contradict Hebrews 12:2. What He meant here was, “If it be possible, let me avoid that part of the payment for sin that separates us as a Triune Godhead.” It was not possible. The payment for sin included the FIRST and THIRD Persons of the Godhead turning their backs on Jesus because of our sin (Mt 27:46). 26:41 THE ADAGE IS TRUE: The mark of a great Christian is not his or her ability to resist temptation, but to avoid it ( Jms 1: 13- 16 )
