12 But when Jesus heard that, he said unto them, They that be whole need not a physician, but they that are 6 sick . 13 But go ye and learnwhat that meaneth, 7 I will have mercy, 8 and not sacrifice: for I am not come to call the 9 righteous, but sinners to repentance. The question of fasting (S/A - Mk 2:18-22 & Lk 5:33-39) 14 Then came to him the disciples of John, saying, Why do we and the Pharisees fast oft, but thy disciples fast not? The promise of CHRIST’S arrest (Fulfilled - Mt 26:50 - AD 32) 15 And Jesus said unto them, 10 Can the children of the bridechamber mourn, as long as the bridegroom is with them? but the days will come, when the 11 BRIDEGROOM shall be taken from them, and then shall they fast. P Parable #1 - The garment and the bottles [A lesson for the saved - Never assume dependence upon men and their movements is necessary to serving God. It is not. God is not a respecter of persons or their movements] (S/A - Mk 2:21-22 and Lk 5:36-39) 16 No man putteth a piece of new cloth unto an old garment, for that which is put in to fill it up taketh from the garment, and the rent is made worse. 17 Neither do men put 12 new wine into old bottles: else the bottles break, and the wine runneth out, and the bottles perish: but they put new wine into new bottles, and both are preserved . 1. Exo 34:6-7 & Psa 32:1-2 & 103:1-3 & Isa 43:25 & Dan 9:9 & Zach 3:2-4 & Rom 4:7-8 Note - If Christ was not God in the flesh, then why attribute to Him the power to forgive sins? 2. Note - The scribes’ statement “ This man blasphemeth ” proved that they understood full well who Jesus was claiming to be –God (Jn 5:17-18 & 10:30- 33); for only God can forgive sin. 3. Psa 139:2 & Isa 66:18 & Mt 12:25 & Lk 9:47 4. Dan 7:13-14 5. Mt 11:19 6. Note - Jesus said, “In order to receive healing you must first know that you’re sick (sinfully), and then you can come to me for healing (spiritually).” 7. Quoted from the OT - Hos 6:6 8. I Sam 15:22 & Mic 6:6-8 & Mt 12:7 9. or, “self- righteous” - Lk 18:9-14 10. Jn 3:29 11. Fulfilled - Mt 26:50 (Christ’s Arrest) 12. Note - The important thing was to save the new wine (Christianity), not the wineskin ( Judaism – Deut 34:6 ) that would try to contain it.

Matthew 9 CHRIST heals a palsied man (S/A - Mk 2:1-12 & Lk 5:17-26) Date - AD 29 1 And he entered into a ship, and passed over, and came into his own city. 2 And, behold, they brought to him a man sick of the palsy, lying on a bed: and Jesus seeing their faith said unto the sick of the palsy; Son, be of good cheer; 1 thy sins be forgiven thee . 3 And, behold, certain of the scribes said within themselves, 2 This man blasphemeth. 4 And Jesus 3 knowing their thoughts said, Wherefore think ye evil in your hearts? 5 For whether is easier, to say, Thy sins be forgiven thee; or to say, Arise, and walk? 6 But that ye may know that the 4 SON OF MAN hath power on earth to forgive sins , (then saith he to the sick of the palsy,) Arise, take up thy bed, and go unto thine house . 7 And he arose, and departed to his house. 8 But when the multitudes saw it, they marvelled, and glorified God, which had given such power unto men. The call of Matthew (S/A - Mk 2:13-17 & Lk 5:27-32) 9 And as Jesus passed forth from thence, he saw a man, named Matthew, sitting at the receipt of custom: and he saith unto him, Follow me . And he arose, and followed him. 10 And it came to pass, as Jesus sat at meat in the house, behold, many publicans and sinners came and sat down with him and his disciples. 11 And when the Pharisees saw it, they said unto his disciples, Why eateth your Master 5 with publicans and sinners?

9:2 We may not always see the results of our faith (Heb 11:36-40), but Jesus does (Heb 11:1,6). He sees our faith through our “obedience” to His commands. In the case of the palsied man, Jesus saw the “obedience” of those who carried him. These men, by their willingness to carry this man to Christ, were simply trusting Him to be the promised OT MESSIAH who would heal all who came to Him according to Isaiah 53:4 (Mt 8:17-17). 9:13 Jesus said, “I don’t what you can offer me ( sacrifice – I Sam 15: 20- 22 ); I want you to want what I can offer you (salvation).” 9:14 The “ disciples of John ” were certainly saved men (Mt 21:32 and Acts 19:4). Their only mistake was in following a man (John the Baptist) instead of the Master. THE ADAGE IS TRUE: People who need people to walk with God don’t walk with God; they walk with people 9:16 The Jews under Judaism thought Jesus came to “mend” their problems within their movement and to reform it. But Jesus did not come to “patch” the problems that men and their movements create. Christianity is not a patch to mend material. Christianity is the material ( new cloth ). Parable #1 is aimed at believers who are attracted to men and their movements , be it famous preachers, faith healers, charismatic leaders or denominationalism. Notice the statement in verse 14 - “ Why do we (the disciples of John) and the Pharisees (the disciples of Judaism ) fast oft, but thy disciples fast not? ” The character flaw – assuming that dependence upon men and their movements is necessary to serving God . It is not.
