OBADIAH

1:17 Mount Zion is an eastern hill, in Jerusalem, on which the Temple stood (II Sam 5:7). 1:18 At the time of the writing of this prophecy, Edom was a very prosperous country. Edom was part of great trade routes. Edom’s soil was also considered to be among the richest in the world. Its capital city (Petra) was hewn out of solid rock, and perhaps had the best natural defenses of any city in the world. In fact, Edom remained prosperous long after the time of Christ. However, Edom was taken captive by the Mohammedans, in AD 636, and left totally desolate as predicted by Obadiah ( there shall not be any remaining of the house of Esau ). To this day, practically no people or animals are found in it (Mal 1:4). 1:20 Although unidentified, some scholars think Sepharad could possibly be Sardis, in Asia Minor.
