HOSEA 4:14

23 1 And I will sow her unto me in the earth; and I will havemercy upon her 2 that had not obtained mercy; and 3 I will say to them which were not my people, Thou art my people; and they shall say, Thou art my God. P Hosea 3 Hosea purchases Gomer (God’s faithful love for His unfaithful people) Date Written - c. 765 BC/AM 3235 1 Then said the LORD unto me, Go yet, love a 4 woman beloved of her friend, 5 yet an adulteress, according to the love of the LORD toward the children of Israel, who look to other gods, and love 6 flagons of wine. 2 So I bought her to me for fifteen pieces of silver, and for an 7 homer of barley, and an 8 half homer of barley: 3 And I said unto her, Thou shalt abide for me many days; thou shalt not play the harlot, and thou shalt not be for another man: so will I also be for thee. 4 For the children of Israel shall abide many days 9 without a king, and without a prince, and without a sacrifice, and with- out an image, and without an ephod, and without 10 teraphim: 5 1 Afterward shall the children of Israel return, and seek the LORD their God, and 11 David their king; and shall fear the LORD and his goodness in the latter days. P Hosea 4 The reason for chastening - no knowledge Date Written - c. 765 BC/AM 3235 1 Hear the word of the LORD, ye chil- dren of Israel: for the LORD hath a con- troversy with the inhabitants of the land, because there is no truth, nor mercy, nor knowledge of God in the land. 2 By swearing, and lying, and killing, and stealing, and committing adultery, they break out, and blood toucheth blood.

3 12 Therefore shall the land 13 mourn, and every one that dwelleth therein shall lan- guish, with the beasts of the field, and with the fowls of heaven; yea, the fishes of the sea also shall be taken away. P 4 Yet let no man strive, nor reprove another: for thy people are as they that strive with the 14 priest. 5 12 Therefore shalt thou fall in the day, and the prophet also shall fall with thee in the night, and I will destroy thy mother. P 6 12 My people are destroyed 15 for lack of knowledge: because thou hast rejected knowledge, I will also reject thee, that thou shalt be no priest to me: seeing thou hast forgotten the law of thy God, I will also forget thy children. P 7 As they were increased, so they sinned against me: 12 therefore will I change their glory into shame. P 8 They eat up the sin of my people, and they set their heart on their iniquity. 9 And there shall be, like people, like priest: 12 and I will punish them for their ways, and reward them their doings. P 10 12 For they shall eat, 16 and not have enough: they shall commit whoredom, and shall not increase: because they have left off to take heed to the LORD. P 11 Whoredom and 17 wine and new wine take away the heart. 12 My people ask counsel at their stocks, and their staff declareth unto them: for the spirit of whoredoms hath caused them to err, and they have gone a whoring from under their God. 13 They sacrifice upon the tops of the mountains, and burn incense upon the hills, under oaks and poplars and elms, because the shadow thereof is good: therefore your daughters shall commit whoredom, 18 and your spouses shall commit adultery. 14 19 I will not punish your daughters when they commit whoredom, nor your spouses when they commit adultery: for

3:1,5 God commanded Hosea to reclaim his unfaithful wife ( Go yet, love a woman ) as an example of His own devotion and love for adulterous Israel. Though Israel would eventually divorce God ( Jere 3:1 b ), according to verse 5, God is not like men who divorce their wives at will. God will wait on His bride to return, even if it takes years. He will never divorce Israel. Israel will always be God’s wife, for the LORD has an unchanging commitment concerning marriage and his bride ( Isa 50:1 ). 3:2 According to Exodus 21:32, the value of “ fifteen pieces of silver ” was half the price that was paid for a slave. In order for Hosea to purchase back his unfaithful bride he was required to pay half the price paid for a slave plus some animal feed (barley). This shows us how worthless Gomer had really become. Once the world is done using and abusing us, our worth is less than half of what it was. 4:6 This phrase ( My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge ) means that information is essential for continued existence. Knowledge may cost us something, but it is never as “costly” as ignorance ( Prov 23:23 ). Information without application is
information without transformation (Psa 1:1-3 and Josh 1:8). THE ADAGE IS TRUE: What you don’t know can hurt you
